German, English

In my teenage years, I used to read anything printed I could get hold of - maybe with the local phone directory as the only exception.
A brief list of books worth to be remembered:
- The works of Shakespeare, Goethe and Dostojewski.
- "Madman's Tale" & "Hart's War" (John Katzenbach)
- "The Lord of the Rings" & "The Hobbit" (Tolkien)
- Books from LDS authorities like Jeffrey Holland, Gene R. Cook, Chieko Okazaki
- "Die Strudlhofstiege" (Heimito von Doderer)
- Funny stuff from authors like Ephraim Kishon, Friedrich Torberg, H.C. Artmann.

Currently I'm reading:
- Mere Christianity, The Chronicles of Narnia (CS Lewis)
- The Wrong Man (Katzenbach)
- Trusting Jesus (Holland)

More or less anything from Stone Age to the middle of the 80s (then my ability to follow the fads somehow disappeared). While I still like some of the hard rock stuff of my youth, I'm starting to enjoy more quiet pieces like Irish and Scottish folk music, and even the works of Mozart and Beethoven.

I always liked all kinds of sports, especially Soccer, Tennis and Windsurfing. Later Aerobic, Nordic Walking and Hiking became more important. Currently my love for sports has become a bit too platonic.
My wife and I enjoy dancing, doing genealogical research together and playing all kind of board games with family and friends.
Finally, while ICT is my profession, it always has been and will be kind of hobby too:
I'm excited about reading LDS Mobile Library on my PDA, listening to general conference talks, firesides and audio books on my cell phone, doing genealogy on the internet etc.

My wife and I joined the church in July 1984, after 9 months of investigating. Our two lovely daughters are married, our son returned from a mission in Germany some month ago and started to study engineering. Our 2 wonderful little granddaughters bring laughter and action in our life, thus making sure that my wife and I do not find too much time to remember all the things we always wanted to endeavour as soon as our kids would be as old as they are now.

Hi,

Thanks for the comment on my Guns and Prophets blog. You've got a point. I was kind of comparing apples to oranges wasn't I? :)

Thanks,

Wesleyty

I have found the Word of Wisdom to be so full of exactly that - Wisdom.  It just amazes me.  When my parents first joined the church years ago (I was only 5 at the time) I heard a lot of Sunday School lessons about NOT smoking, and NOT drinking, and NOT doing drugs, etc., etc.  It wasn't until I was into my 30's that DO's in the Word of Wisdom really started to sink into my brain.  Pretty bad, huh? - I mean that it should take that long.   LOL

There were also other things I began to notice.  For example:  We're not supposed to drink alcohol, but that doesn't mean alcohol is bad.  The Lord reveals its purpose - that it's for the washing of our bodies.  I've been amazed at how effective it's been in dealing with the skin cancer.  Skin cancer requires keeping the skin very clean in order to lesson certain symptoms, but it can't be cleaned with just anything.  I'm finding that alcohol is one of the things that can be used, and it helps to lessen the misery of certain symptoms.

I'm also finding that certain herbal combinations are very effective.  Perhaps you're familiar with a tea called Essiac.  Some people claim it's helped to actually cure them.  Though this has not been the case with me, I can say that it's been extremely effective in lessening the pain.  I blend a certain other herbal combination into the Essiac which offers my body the nutritional support it needs for me to remain functional and flexible.  I can't even say how grateful I am for these two herbal remedies.  They've allowed me to spend my time constructively instead of always being focused on the cancer.  A friend of mine passed away a year ago January from cancer and his last few months alive were miserable.  He was in horrible pain in spite of the fact that his doctors kept giving him morphine.  I feel truly blessed.

It would be nice if these things could be available generally to people, but the government is doing everything it can to limit people's access to Essiac.  They would rather have people be dependant upon chemotherapy and other drugs which tend to kill more patients than they cure.  It's really quite tragic.

My mother is the real health food and vitamin person.  She's like your wife - she reads about it and studies it all the time.

Forgive me, but I've got to go for now.  I have a blanket I've been trying to finish.  It's a Relief Society project.  I was hoping to have it all done by tomorrow so I can turn it back in.

Take care. Best of everything to you and your wife.  Happy Valentine's Day to you both!

Thank you for the feedback on my blogs :)  I like that one too.  Max Lucado has an ability to speak right to me in the way he rights.  He has a number of books and I'd recommend picking some up :)  Thanks again.

Dear Gjh,

You must commute on a train or something.  Please don't tell me you're driving down the road during "rush hour" with a mini computer in your hand!  LOL LOL

You certainly have a point there about the Lord holding us in His hands.  I haven't finished my blog yet, but the ideas about nutrition I do feel are important.  Section 89 does warn us that the Lord is giving us this advice because of conspiring men in the last days.  Exactly what these men are conspiring to do is not mentioned, but I trust the Lord to know they aren't up to any good.   In America, so many foods are chemically produced.  It was my hope to pursuade people to stay away from those things as much as possible.  I guess that comes under the heading of "doing all we can do".  If we do our part and observe correct principles, the Lord can bless us.  We can't expect him to bless us when we just throw correct principles to the wind.

The cancer I've had has been a learning and growing experience for me, too.  Even though it's stage 4 cancer I'm still certain I'm not going anywhere until the Lord feels I've finished my work here upon the earth.  He's been most kind in providing me with herbs and other things I need that have greatly diminished the pain and allowed me to maintain my flexability.  Because of this, I'm still able to function and do constructive things.  I told my bishop that's the only thing that bothers me about having this cancer.  It's not at all the thought of perhaps dieing from it, but that I would end up wasting away - not being able to do anything .  I've never been a patient sick person, but even when I was sick I just had to feel I was still doing something constructive with my time.

Take care.  Thanks for the comment.  Have a great day AND A SAFE COMMUTE!

Dear Gjh,

Saw you visited our site.  Welcome to LDS.net.  It's a lot of fun getting to know different people here.  In a way, it's been a real blessing for us.  We're getting to know many people we would have met in no other way.  It's great.  We love the set-up and how it's possible to read other people's statements of faith and testimonies.

Your reference to liking most any kind of music from the Stone Age forward made us chuckle.  Sometimes we feel a bit dated, too.

We see that you like genealogy.  Are you in an area that has the new.familysearch temple ready program yet?  It's really amazing.  We love it.

Hope to hear from you again soon.  Take care.
