LDS and metaphysics
Posted On 05/21/2011 11:00:29 by bjshideler

I recently rewatched Avatar at home and thoroughly enjoyed it the second time. It was easier to move past the imperialistic themes of the movie and I once again was very enthralled with the metaphysical aspect it portrayed.  I continued to wonder how other LDS individuals viewed metaphysics and what they thought of it.  I am an engineer by training, so I like to look at the world with a scientific view, now I do not reject spiritual things or ideas because they don't fit into my view of science or vice versa, I just put them on the shelf until either the science is corrected to match the doctrine or my understanding of the principles is enlightened and I can rectify the discrepancy in my mind.

Now for my thoughts on the movie.  In the movie there is a life force that flows between all living things.  I don't think that this a hard principle for LDS to grasp, as we believe that the light of Christ permeates everywhere and that all testify of Him.  The Nav'i have reverence for nature and for life and regret taking life unnecessarily. This can also relate to the LDS principle of all things are spiritual and not physcial.  If we truly believed that all things had a spirit would be waste the resources that the Lord has given us.

In the past when I have participated in priesthood ordinances in particular when I have conferred the gift of the Holy Ghost or conferred the Priesthood I have felt a flow of energy through my arms during that experience.  I believe that there is much truth out in the world if we have eyes to see and ears to hear.  What a wonderful opportunity that we have when we watch these movies and then discuss them with our friends that we can testify of important truths of the gospel and maybe prompt their spirit to remember them.
