Up Awake Ye Defenders of Zion
Posted On 06/13/2011 00:59:21 by Gargantuan

When I served my Mission to the Indians our little Zone of Elders held an early morning Missionary preparation each morning.  Some of the Missionaries often found it difficult to stay awake during these meetings and would doze off.  When this would happen the other Missionaries would silently gather around the slumbering Elder and at once boom out the words to the hymnal, Up Awake Ye Defenders of Zion. The sudden explosion of voices always startled the unsuspecting Missionary.  It was always done in good humor and sincere intent, but the victim would never get sleepy in the early morning Preps again.   Though I never was found to be dozing, the humbling experience that I witnessed has helped me to be determined to never be caught dozing-off.  Blessings, Gar

Thoughts that kept me from dozing-off in Church

Church was a wonderful experience today.  There was a warm spirit present that made all who attended feel blessed.  However, like most of the older brethren, I was really tired and battled with the temptation to doze off.  I kept my mind active by listening to the speakers and by taking mental notes.  The following are some ideas that helped keep awake.

Time is an element of mortal learning and understanding without it there is little true knowledge.

The simple act of partaking of the Sacramental emblems each week is a humble act of faith by members of the Church.

Just as my father unexpectedly passed away so will the Second Coming of Jesus Christ be for many.
