I Was Lost and Needed Help

It is so frustrating to think that you have made the right choice as you ponder a decision only to find out that you are wrong. What do you do? Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Gar — "You can make every decision in your life correctly if you can learn to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit". — Marion G. Romney

To Be Heading in the Right Direction

I went shopping tonight for a special Christmas gift.  I was told that it could be found in a store about 20 miles from my home.  I knew that I should have looked for it sooner than this evening, but more important issues had always seemed to occur, and I didn't make the time.

The store that I was directed didn't have the product I wanted.  I asked the cashier where it could be found and how to get there.  I asked him to draw me a map that would get me there.

I followed the written instructions on the map correctly. When the store couldn't be found, however, I started to look for it on my own.  I didn't stop to ask anyone for directions, because I didn't think that was necessary.  The town where it was supposed to be located was so small that I knew if just drove down the main street long enough, I surely find the store.

I didn't find it, but I didn't stop trying to locate it.  I ended up driving all around that countryside in the dark.  I became lost, and I didn't have a clue where I was. Finally, I had to swallow my pride and stop to ask for help to get back on the right road. I explained to a friendly convenience store cashier that I was lost and needed help finding my home.  I must have looked pretty desperate, because after she told me how to get back on the right road, she laughed and repeated her instructions.  Once I saw the lights of the Valley temple steeple, I knew where I was.  I wasn't lost anymore.  It felt so good to be heading in the right direction.

When any of us make a mistake such as breaking a covenant we make with God or a commitment with another is it possible to ask for forgiveness and help? God is always willing to forgive us of our mistakes if we sincerely ask for it.  If we need to see the proper priesthood leader and confess the mistake, the way back will be made clearer once the process begins.  The proper priesthood leader can help us do the right things needed to follow the spirit and feel right before God.

When we make a mistake by not keeping a commitment with a friend we can ask for forgiveness of that mistake and patiently endure whatever ire that may come as a result of that mistake.  If we sincerely ask for forgiveness of an offense and pray for the offended heart[s] to be softened then God will hear our prayers and will bless us for the sincere efforts of our heart.

Just as I knew I was on the right track after I saw the temple lights, so can we find peace as we learn to follow the spirit and follow the wise counsel and advice of our priesthood leaders.
