i was reading a book and it talked about when the relieaf society was first maid joseph smith told the wemen that they can perform all of the things the men can do. like for instints the laying on of hands for healling. it menshiond that emma was asked by a women to do a healing for her so emma and 2 other women helped and they did the laying on of hands and almost emeaditly after words she was better. i confronted my bishop on it and he said it is true you can do such things and you dont have to hold the priesthood all you need is faith in god and your self that you can do it but every one thinks its improper for women to do it.

Can you please say what book? I know of instances where sisters in the church used their faith, not the priesthood, to heal. The priesthood is the power to act in God's name on the earth. Everyone can perform miracles if they have enough faith. I would highly reccomend the new relief society manual "Daughters in my kingdom" for clarification of the role of relief society. You can even read it online at LDS.org.

I'm a bit confused by this too (and some of the responses here). Healing doesn't have to be done in the name of the priesthood, healing is done in the name of Christ, right? The message that keeps coming across to me in RS is that yes, women can do good things, as long as it's caring for domestic needs. I still haven't run across any instances where women did any kind of prayer for healing or laying on of hands sorts of things via RS. I'm trying not to draw a final conclusion from this, though it seems to be pointing to these things being frowned upon. Time will tell, I suppose!

There are many blessings we all have available to us, whether men or women. We are all entitled to inspiration and have the power of prayer, and there is great healing in that. There are also some ordinances that have to be performed by the priesthood with authority they have received from someone that has that authority. Women receive blessings through the priesthood, but cannot do things in the name of the priesthood. That does not mean they cannot do good things.

I was told by a religion professor at BYUI that women used to hold the priesthood, and then it was taken away when it was revealed to be only for men. I need to research it a lot more.
