BYU faculty relationship to Honor Code
Posted On 04/24/2012 23:57:02 by CaresAboutHonor
I'm trying to digest the following paragraph, that the Brigham Young University is including in its faculty members syllabi. The issue is the the faculty member didn't write the paragraph.

University Policies Honor Code
In keeping with the principles of the BYU Honor Code, students are expected to be honest in all of their academic work. Academic honesty means, most fundamentally, that any work you present as your own must in fact be your own work and not that of another. Violations of this principle may result in a failing grade in the course and additional disciplinary action by the university. Students are also expected to adhere to the Dress and Grooming Standards. Adherence demonstrates respect for yourself and others and ensures an effective learning and working environment. It is the university's expectation, and my own expectation in class, that each student will abide by all Honor Code standards. Please call the Honor Code Office at 422-2847 if you have questions about those standards. Question: Considering that the professor didn't write the paragraph, does anyone other than myself have a problem with this?

Question Does anyone other than me find this paragraph to be self contradictory?

The paragraph is written in first person suggesting that the professor wrote it. But the professor did not write it. So, a paragraph telling people to be honest implies a falsehood. This kind of shoddy logic won't help BYU students learn the different between truth and error.

I don't get what problem you seem to have with it.

I'm trying to understand the point of your Blog about the BYU honor code, therefore I have written the following hoping that it clarifies your statement.

Anyone committed to adhering to the principles of the BYU honor code would think that no one but an honest person would have submitted the well written Blog, BYU faculty relationship to Honor Code.

I think that the majority of students who attend Brigham Young University understand the institution’s outstanding honor code. While some students may be tempted to forget the honor code and thus cheat themselves of the opportunity to develop good character as well, most do not, and are honest, wholesome and clean looking young people.

For those few who may forget some of the values of the code, a friendly word of encouragement is always a kind reminder to remember their previous commitment. Thanks for your reminder, Gar
