Disappointed!
Posted On 05/01/2012 11:04:22 by prettyeyes64
I am a new convert to the church, which I feel is one of the best decision I have ever made in my life. I have been apart of several denomination, but was never happy, so I kept searching until the Lord brought me back full circle with the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints. This time around I connected with the members and Elders very quickly, then shortly was baptised in the name of Christ. I loved it! The Latter Day Saints werer everything I needed and wanted spiritually in a church bodied congregation, or so I thought. After several months past I found that the members were not what they portray themselves out to be, I'm mainly speaking on the Women's Relief Society. The way Emma Smith organized and operated the organization is by far not to the same standards today that was implemented back then. Don't get me wrong, the Relief Society help ut in the community, but on a very poor scale of ratio. It's important that we become more active in the community than we have been so that others can truly learn more about us as well as understand us. Seeing the sisters out there, helping others, becoming involve in the activities and needs of the community can, wnd will impress a lot of individuals, and seek to ask us questions about who we are, and why are we doing so much for the communities when the other local churches are not. What I am saying is, we need to do more than just be sisters for sisters only. The Relief Society President should make sure that projects are going or implemented at least once every month for agencies like the Women's Protective Agency, the homeless, abused children, abused ederly's, plenty of fun raising to help the community with utility assistance, food bank, medication, medical supplies, ect... . This is also an excellent way to help our elders as well. Non-members ask a lot of questions, especially if they are seriously interested in our faith, and this is were our elders take over, to teach, to inspire, and to convert in our true church. It is a joint effort and relationship that should come together as one. What better way to teach non-members the true about Mormons and our faith, by ACTION!

Hi there. I was just reminded of a saying by Mahatma Gandhi: Be the change you want to see in the world. I found your post very inspiring. I am new to the LDS church myself. I have yet to be baptized, although I know it is the truth. I do not know what my local Church will be like but I hope there is a lot going on. If not I plan on doing something and inviting my fellow church goes to join, even other churches, businesses. I work for Aveda and if there is one thing the beauty industry has taught me is it only takes one go getter to inspire. Good for you! The fire is there for a reason and God will show you :)

I see what you are saying. The Church has always encouraged members to be involved in the community. I think a lot of members today however, because of the economy, stresses of life etc., are not as involved as in years past. Most probably feel it is all they can handle just taking care of their own families. It sounds like you have a lot of energy and a willingness to help. Just do what you can, and maybe it will inspire others.

I'm finding that it is more common in numerous States than anyone really expect. Emma Smith is probably turning over in her grave. The detour has become disrespectfully permanent in the organization. I have seen some who should not be Mormons, much less in R.S... Their are quite a few in my area who are uppity, selfish, and outright arrogant to other members, and the concerns of the community. I feel this is where our Heavenly Father want me to be, otherwise I would leave. I have found the brothers in the church to be more friendly than the sisters.

Mine isn't quite that bad and granted I'm pretty new (just baptised in September) so wasn't sure quite what to expect. I just don't think the scope of what RS is supposed to be doing is wide enough somehow. And yes some of the sisters are just participating so others will see them participate and comment positively about it, not because their hearts are in it. Most are mothers, married in the Temple and with kids. I'm married, no kids, unbelieving spouse. I guess my situation is different than most so I'm still having trouble fitting in.

I feel exactly the same. I have gottten so tired of expressing my opinions about this to the sisters that I am sick and tired of them and their phony-ways. I don't even bother to go to relief society anymore, because most of the time it's like a gossiping hen room of whining complaining sisters who get frustrated with their husbands because the church ask certain times of the year to help out at the foodbank. Some Relief Society huh?

I have often felt the same way as you do in this post. I notice that there is a sort of "cocoon effect" going on at my ward. Many are only looking after church members and are for lack of a better term inactive in the non-LDS community. Looking for ways I can branch out myself, maybe someone else will do the same. It has to start with me. :)
