Quitting Smoking
Posted On 09/27/2012 10:20:23 by Minnie
Hi Everyone, I've been a member now for 2 years, but have been married to a member for 10. We both smoke and are really trying to quit so that we can get sealed in the temple with our little boy (who is 5). I don't know why we can't seem to stick to it, but we are very frustrated over it. If there is anyone out there (or in here) who has any advice, tricks or resources it would be greatly appreciated. We have tried the patch, gum, church addiction program (well not a 100% because there isn't anyone in our Church who is in a position to support us through it. We were told to pretty much go it alone for now....it's not working!

Thank you so much for your inspiring and heartfelt advice! My husband and I have both read your comment and plan on doing everything we can to beat this. We feel really good about what you have proposed. Hopefully soon I will be back here writing about my success.

Thanks so much again.

I too have this problem. I was born and raised in the church. Have not been active in over 25 years and the smoking is a big part of that. Recently I have had some major challenges in my life that have opened my eyes to what I need in my life. I know the gospel is what is missing and I want it back. I want that closeness with the lord. I believe that with his help everything is possible. Tomorrow is my first time back to church in so long I cant even remember. I believe the Lord can help us and will help us quit. You are not alone and we can do it!!!

One of the most wonderful aspects of our religion is the ability to call on the powers of heaven. I am not talking about pie-in-the-sky stuff that only is in the scriptures. I have personally seen miracles, one of the most recent was when I went to one of my home teaching sisters who was dying of heart congestion in her trailer. Her doctor told her that if she didn't come into the hospital she wouldn't live through the night She had legal problems that caused her to reject the advise. We, my companion, relief Society president and I prayed together and administered to her. She cam to church the next day.

I have seen many other manifestations of the Lord's will, including the passing of Church members who are appointed to death. In each instance the power of God is never the question, but rather His will. You have a real advantage because you know his will. It is absolutely His will that you keep His commandments and stop smoking. HE WILL HELP YOU.

When Christ's Apostles went out two by two they had great success and came back rejoicing saying that they had worked all manner of miracles in the name of Christ. However, then a father who brought a boy who had an evil spirit in him. The disciples could not succeed in casting the devil out.

After the Savior had cured the boy the Apostles asked why they couldn't cure the boy. Christ said this kind cometh out not but by prayer and fasting.

Lifes greatest blessing often come from our greatest trials. The greatest manifestations of Gods power come after we have done all that we can do and in desperation turn our hearts to our Heavenly Father and rely on Him.

I would suggest this for you. Decide how much and how long you can fast an pray. Take care not to hurt yourself, but stretch youself to do more than you usually do. If you can't fast with food and drink, you can give up other things that are important to you. With you spouse, sit down and read carefully (before your fast) Isaiah 58: 1-14 Pray about it together and individually. Pray about it together before on setting dates for your fast.

Talk and pray about it some more. Set a day when you will start your fast acording to the pattern given Isaiah 58. If I were you, and if you are not too far from the temple, drive there, walk the grounds. Sit together on a bench and pray. Start your fast there.

In ancient Israel, only the priests were allowed inside the Temple. The Savior himself never set foot inside the Temple. However all of Israel came to the Temple grounds, where they were provide a long series of Rooms and open spaces where they would talk, learn, worship, etc.

Go to the temple, look at the grounds and the spire(s). Pray, fast, read the scripture. I promice you in the name of the God of Israel, if you do these things that you will suceed. I know it and you can know it and experience the great miracle of God's power. If you do this, if you don't take any shortcuts, this will become a pattern for you that will effect the rest of your life and open the windows of God's power to you.

My prayers are with you, and I hope to see you in at the alter of the Almighty God inside His Holy House.

See Matthew 17:13-21

Would you feel comfortable using therapeutic hypnosis? I read of a comparison to see which weight loss program worked best. The hypnosis did better than the other methods. The participant went for a session with the therapist, then took home an audio tape of the therapist's voice (I think) prompting the client in whatever way was used during the session . . . so it wasn't a one time input.

I have wondered why some people seem to be able to set their mind and stop. I've read about people stopping with prayer too. As far as I tell, it is something between your body (mind, chemistry, etc) and your spirit -- who rules? Master of my fate, the captain of my soul. I would be extra vigilant about health, like water, superb nourishment including trace minerals, exercise, deep breathing and whatever else you know and like.

I would try two things, if you haven't - I know folks who have used these as a bridge between actual cigarettes and stopping altogether. First, electronic cigarettes. Second, snus. The idea is that you use either of those instead of smoking, and eventually you stop altogether. I'm not a smoker and can't give you any personal examples, but I know of people who have done both of those.
