While viewing the funeral today of President Hinckley, I started thinking about how he influenced my life. The first thing that came into my mind was...he taught me how to be a Parent. Thats right, he taught me how to be a Parent. I was 31yrs old when I was first called as the Bishop of our Ward. My wife and I have 4 children and they were still very young. I believe they were 2,4,6, and 8yrs old.
There was a Primary broadcast one night and President Hinckley was speaking. He was talking about teaching children as parents etc. He related a story how a young mother always told her child not to go to the corner. One day this Mother let the child play outside and she looked out the window and her child started going right to the corner. This Mother ran after the child and said...I thought I told you not to go to the corner. The child asked...what is the corner. President Hinckley went to explain how important it is to teach our children rather than yell or scold. That made an impression upon me and I will tell all of you this...I was not a perfect Parent...but I can assure you that night...I became a better Parent cause I learned how to teach my children instaed of yelling. I have never forgotten that evening. When I arrived home I apologized to my children for being a lousy Dad and that I was going to be better.
From time to time we talk about that night and when I watch my daughter and her husband teach our grandaughter I realise they are great Parents.
I believe that Presidnet Hinckley has touched all of us in a good positive way and he has made a difference and we are all better people.
