What Exactly is a "Utah Mormon"?
Posted On 04/10/2008 18:30:56 by ama49
Today an African American Gentleman stopped by my table at a company.  We talked religion and he told me I didn't sound like a "Utah Mormon."

Check out the whole story on my blog:

Could not get the link to work on my computer, but I have lived many places in this world, and sometimes the Utah Mormons remeind me of the People of Nephi just before they lost every thing because of the stiff neckedness of the people...other areas still show me that it is all not completely that way only a few places...

I was born and raised in the church outside of Utah and I still say things like "Ugh, Utah Mormons..." Your question got me thinking why and I think this is what it is: if it's not a condescending attitude they have, than it's an attitude where you expect everyone to be like you, to believe like you, to live like you, etc. It's almost like it's suprising and/or offensive when someone is not like you, whether that's being a member of the church that drinks Pepsi, someone whose friends are not members, or someone who's never heard of the church. It's almost like there's a social awkwardness for Utah Mormons when they're not with they're own kind; they say things that come across as...weird, naiive, and/ignorant. "What? You don't believe that pre-marital sex is wrong? Uhh....I gotta go."

Let's just say some Utah Mormons have 'bubble syndrome,' if it's something from outside their bubble, they react adversely to it or act like it needs to fixed (even if it does need to be fixed)! If you live in a place outside of Utah (where 50% of the population is Mormon) you can't have 'bubble syndrome' because you're bubble gets popped at least twice a day. When you're around so many people who believe what you do like in Utah, it's hard not to look at someone sideways when they don't believe what you do and I think that sideways look is what people think of when they refer to someone as a Utah Mormon.

Ok, that could be gross over-generalization, but maybe not... :) This certainly doesn't apply to all Mormons in Utah, just the ones classified as Utah Mormons. This isn't meant to be mean, but it's based on my experience and my limited ability to express it.
