disturbing issue prior to baptism
Posted On 06/30/2008 22:20:22 by JHM-in-Bountiful

I would have liked to have this posted in the forum topic section. I'm not sure how to start one. This will have to do. My baptism is scheduled for July 12th. Tonight I watched the movie "contact". I first saw the movie about 10 years ago. I remember the church being mentioned in the movie. My dvd copy does not have the scene about the church.  So, I did an internet search to see if the scene was avaliable online. I could not find the deleted scene. NOW FOR THE REAL ISSUE. When doing the search on the net. I came across an upsetting video. To make along story short, a once active member in the church became ill. While at the hospital she claimed to have had a near death experience (NDE). She stated she was in hell because of choosing the LDS faith. During her experience there, she had brief contact with a church member who had passed away. He told her he made a mistake (being a member) and that she should not follow the faith. If she did, she would spend eternity in hell. Satan was using the church as a deception to brings souls unto him. I WANT TO KNOW IF THERE ARE ANY DOCUMENTED NDE EXPERIENCES THAT OTHER CHURCH MEMBERS HAVE EXPERIENCED. If so, were they negative like the woman experienced? Or, have there been positive experiences. This whole incident has me rethinking me being baptised and being a member of the church. OH, I FORGOT TO MENTION THE WOMAN ALSO CLAIMS SHE WENT TO HEAVEN AND SAW JESUS. She knew in her heart that the church was not true. Can anyone help me find positive nde experiences?

I visit teach a 92 year old black woman "Grandma Ruby" who has told me and others multiple times about one of her NDE's, which is really part of her conversion story.  She came to Layton, Utah from Texas during world war II and was employed at Hill AFB in a top security position.  Somehow, she noticed a peculiar, very modest, group of people and wanted to know more about them.  They were Mormons and she felt at home with them so she attended church with them, but never joined.  Then in 1982 (I think) she had a NDE.  She was in the University hospital in SLC, and she says her friends, the Bishop and his wife were there when she died.  She found herself in a large box with no way out, finally she looked up and saw a friend of hers, and somehow she went from there to a place where there were horses and men armored and ready for battle.  She didn't want to stay there.  Then she was in a beautiful place with hills, grass, and trees, but she was not truly happy there either.  Then she was outside a great golden building that stretched as far as she could see in either direction, and she recognized that one of her friends was there.  Everyone inside was singing beautifully, and she wanted to go inside, but when she attempted to do so, Jesus told her she couldn't go in, but had to be baptized first.  She said she had been baptized at age 6 in The Church of the Living God, Pillar, Ground, and True.  Jesus told her she needed to be baptized "in My Church" and that she would have to return to earth to do "a work"  with "My children."  She apparently argued about that, too, saying she was tired of work and just wanted to stay and rest.  I don't know how long that went on, except the version she tells is much longer than this.  Anyway, she did eventually come back and she asked her Bishop friend "Did Jesus mean this church is the one I should be baptized into?"  "I think so..." he reportedly replied.  (I personally think he said "I think so!")  Then, she was baptized.  She has not always been very active, and hasn't attended church for years, possibly due to some health issues.  The friend that she saw in the golden building has not died yet, and is, in fact, a very embittered Mormon/atheist/ex-Mormon.  (If I have the story straight.)  So Grandma Ruby has not given up on her friend.

There will be a lot of propaganda out there both for good and ill.  Do not believe every video out there as people can fake anything.  I know in my heart the church is true, and I have had positive experience to confirm it myself.  I cannot give you or make you see the truth of it though.  I can only say this, go and find out of yourself.  Go to the temple grounds, fasting and praying for an answer.  Go and read the full book of mormon, see the statements of the leaders of the church.  Look to the fruits that bear in the lives and from the lives of those living it.  See if it looks and feels right or wrong.  Listen and look in your heart to see if these things become self evident.  What is stated by the world can be confusing and difficult, but what is stated in your heart and mind, and what you truly feel when you go into a place that is a good place will become obvious once you learn to recognize what the feelings mean.  If it is uplifting, good and does not make you feel uncomfortable and have twinges that something is not quite right, then it is probably good.  If it does not sound right, something is not feeling good, then there is something wrong with it probably.  If there are answers you still need, seek out the missionaries, and do not be afraid to discuss them fully.  But find out for yourself, not from what people throw out there.  You will find tons of anti literature all the time, but there are answers and lots of times those are put out by people who do not understand, or are deliberately taking things out of context to make things seem evil.  Often some of what they misquote is a bit funny if you go back and look at the origional context and story.  Do not give up hope though on finding the truth.  Sometimes the world is at the darkest before you find the light.  I know you will find it if you keep looking.  With over three million people in this church there are lots of stories of people who have had their testimony made sure.  Look for them, and you will find them, even on here.  Best of blessings,

Maraleh

Let you know she is not even correct. Why? I have touched death a few times
in this life, to include this year; I could tell you, you have chosen the most
correct religion or the true Gospel of Christ. If you like, we can discuss this
personally offline.

I can testify, as too personal knowledge that Jesus is the Christ. Any man
who lives the Gospel and follows the WILL of THE FATHER can receive the same
visions as Joseph Smith. One can walk like Paul in his conversation and truly
know that Christ lives.

You my brother have chosen the right,

Your friend

JHM...yes, I am personally aware of at least two NDEs by members of the Church that are not just positive but glorious!  One is published and one is not.  The published one is a book by Betty Eadie called "Embraced by the Light".  She does not mention the church in the book, but she joined the church after her NDE.  Don't be put off by that video.  My reading suggests that most NDEs are heavily influenced or filtered by the life experiences of the teller.  All good things come from God and this church is so good in so many ways it has to be true..."by their fruits ye shall know them."

You are just starting out in the gospel but I joined the church 37 years ago at the age of 19. The Lord literally led me by the hand to this church and witnessed to me unmistakenly that I had found my heavenly "home".  I can tell you with no hesitation at all that I have been grateful every single day of my life for the last 37 years that the Lord led me to this church. It has made me a better husband, a better father and a better person than I ever could have been without it. The joy that it has brought into my life overwhelms me and I don't know why I have been so blessed.

JHM, my brother. God has picked you out and blessed you to reveal the truth of the gospel to you.  This church teaches of Christ, prophesies of Christ, we worship Him and love Him. And through Him we come to the Father. You have to follow your heart, but you cannot go wrong by being baptised in the name of Christ by someone who has the Priesthood Authority from God.  I'm telling you bro, by having the witness of the truth that you have and being baptised, you just won the spritual lottery and "all that the Father hath" can be yours.  I don't know you personally, but I feel your anxiety and your desire to follow the truth and I love you as a brother for the goodness of your heart.  I was once where you are now.  Be of good cheer.  You know in your heart it's the right thing for you...doubt not, fear not.  I have never regretted for one minute in 37 years my decision to be baptised.  God bless you in your journey.

PS- ( haha sorry...) If you don't want to order the book, I can share with you some key points he made in the book. It is not made to be a " LDS faith is right, everyone else is wrong" type of thing and he is in fact LDS. It's really great, he talks a lot about service and the United States and it's amazing purposes for our present days. Among a ton of other eye opening things that once you read it you go " oh...ya that makes complete sense!" It's AWESOME

You'd also need to order it online because it's out of stock at most deseret books.

Sure thing buddy! "The messege" by Lance Richardson. I know this guy, he's an awesome awesome honest fellow. He does not claim this book to prophetic and makes it very clear that his memory is a little hazy and can't remember a lot of it. But it's an amazing read.
