The Word of Wisdom- More than a Code of Health
Posted On 07/22/2008 15:48:58 by InTheDoghouse

Food pyramid

I had a friend one time answer a questionaire in which he was asked what his three wishes would be... one of them made me crack up... it was to flip the food pyramid.

Eating Healthy is a concern for most people in the world today. Fast food restaurants are under attack, and "miracle diets" are surfacing everywhere you look.

It is interesting that in Section 89 of the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord gave us instructions on this very issue when He stated:

In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation—

The Word of Wisdom is wonderful instruction on how to keep our bodies running smoothly as He designed, and how to avoid the pitfalls of the "conspiring men" who wish to riddle our health with obstacles. But more than just a simple code of health, it is a principle with a promise.

The principle is simply the outline of the food restrictions placed on His people, and His request for obedience. I think the bottom line is exactly this...obedience. He instructs, we obey... simple?

The promise for our obedience is that of Eternal Life.

As much as we would like to limit the Word of Wisdom to our temporal bodies I think it is an eternal law with an eternal promise.

The Promise:

Doctrine and Covenants Section 89

And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones;

And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;
And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.
And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.

Health
This health that is promised is so much more than physical health. When a reference is given to the navel, one thinks the center point. It is also a reference to a life line. Jesus Christ should be our center point, he is also our life line that we as children of God have to the Father. "Christ is also the marrow or 'rich and nutritious food' on which we rely; He is the 'innermost or essential part' that we need to live."

Wisdom and Knowledge

Obedience to the word of wisdom, allows us to enter the temple. Have you ever wondered why that was a requirement for entering the temple? IMHO it is because of the promises themselves. The temple is the place where we can receive wisdom and knowledge, and entrance there is predicated on obedience.

Stamina and Energy

Have you noticed an increase in energy drinks and stimulants on the market today? They are all a counterfeit of this promise. True energy only comes from one source... God the Father, through Jesus Christ.

Eternal Life

This is the greatest promise of all. It is the promise that the destroying angel will passover you just as it did in the days of Moses. Remember how all that were in the house were spared because of the blood of the lamb which was spread over the door posts?

Covenants allow us to be in the "house of Israel". We receive those covenants through the priesthood in the "House of the Lord". These covenants allow for us to receive Eternal life which is the greatest of all the blessings of the Lord... and just think, it is all because of obedience!

Please share some of your own insights about the Word of Wisdom and the blessings received from obedience to it.....

SHAH,

Being busy and not taking the time to prepare proper meals is a great snare in our lives.  Physical balance is a part of spiritual balance I believe also.

Eating from the rainbow is a really great suggestion.  We  Mormons DO food, sometimes way too much!  lol

Thanks for your added insights.

Stacey,

I am with you... I need a lot of help with this one as well!  lol  I have a sweet tooth and love my diet soda way too much!  lol  Listening to the Lord and obeying is a process that is learned over time.  One step in the right direction produces rewards.  I agree with your comment about the Lord happy when we are trying and doing our best.  Thank goodness for that!

Tammyi,

You are absolutely right!  Our Father in Heaven has given us instruction and council for all areas of our life.  To me this shows us that he loves us and wants us to be happy!

Keith,

Thank you for adding that link.  It is a great article that we should all read and study.

Obedience is the key to a healthier life both physically and spiritually, I would have to agree!  I also know that when we eat right and excercise that we better and have more energy.  Knowing it is one thing, doing it is another! lol  Thanks for your comments.

Mormon Soprano,

Well said!  In the end the best diet of all is what the Lord planned for us all along --- all things in their most natural state (Pres. Benson).  It's simple but we make it more complicated.  I've heard it said "eat from the rainbow" meaning -- fruits, vegetables and grains.  A variety of items supplies a variety of important nutrients.  I know that the Lord will help us in this endeavor.  After all, He is more interested in us than we sometimes may be in Him.

It seems that being 'too busy' to plan meals and to cook (basic life necessities) may be one of Satan's greatest tools.  If he can get us out of balance physically he has a better 'in' spiritually.

Thanks for the reminder!

Wow I must admit I have to agree with MormonSoprano. It is alot easier for us too kep the DON'TS of the Word Of Wisdom than the do's. If we all followed the WoW" as we should how healthy and ready for the day we would be. We would all be much more alert and ready for the what the world has to throw at us (I know I would be better off anyway) I thank inthedoghouse for bringing this to my attention!! As I need to work on the food's my husband and I eat and our exercise ALOT! I know I am not alone on this one, but one thing is for sure I need to read my scriptures and pray for help in keeping the WoW" as the lord desires us too.

I have a very BIG SWEET TOOTH and love of meat hehehee I love the changes/ideas given by Mormonsoprano also. I must try to do better, as I know and believe The Lord gave us this counsel for our own good! We are the  one's who suffer and miss out on the blessings if we do not follow as we should. Although the Lord also know's when we are trying ou best! I know when I joined the Church and changed alot of my bad habbits (drinking etc) that I felt really good about it. My body felt healthier etc, so I know as I try to eat healthier and exercise that I will feel even BETTER!! Thanks everyone for reminding me there is more to the word of wisdom, I REALLY NEEDED THIS REMINDER!!

Good luck every1

One of the things that I was going to mention is the point that MormonSoprano brings out in her response and that is that it is truly amazing that medical science is agreeing more and more with the counsel set forth in the Word of Wisdom. The link to the article in this month's Ensign about the Word of Wisdom is: http://www.lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=2354fccf2b7db010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD&locale=0&sou rceId=86c33645a2cba110VgnVCM100000176f620a____&hideNav=1

I know for myself that I must do better in my dietary habits. I admit that I love junk food. I always have something in the house or at work to snack on. I will also admit that there are days when I have literally lived off of junk food. I notice that when I don't eat healthy I constantly feel tired and run down. I tend to get sleepy more often and I am just not as alert as I should be. So, yes, I also agree that this is definitely one area where we can all improve. The Word of Wisdom brings with it a blessing of health and strength to those who are obedient to its counsel. And so, I agree with pinkiwikisses that it is really about obedience. When we follow the counsels of the Lord rich blessings are ours to enjoy, but when we are not obedient to the Lord's counsels we must suffer the consequences for being disobedient. In the case of health, disobedience can mean sickness, disease, restlessness, low energy levels, non alertness, and the like. The Lord did not give us this important counsel for us to ignore, but for us to heed and obey.
