The Lost Gospels (Judas)
Posted On 09/17/2008 15:55:57 by marinalmoore

I'm watching National Geographic... and Its the "Lost Gospel of Judas" ... Now this is the first I have heard about this... I would like to present this to the Church, and all my friends. I have a heavy heart in my chest. Should I believe that Jesus told Judas to turn him in? why didn't he just go to them? I don't understand... Anyone have any idea about this? Or was it like the Bible says, and he betrayed Christ? I know that the Bible was tainted ... But I wonder what the truth is... I love God, and Christ, and the Holy Ghost, and also, I have forgiveness for everyone in the world...I just would like to know the truth... of course I might have to wait until the afterlife to really know... blah... Well, I guess this makes a good conversation. confusion... I know noone on here can tell me the truth but, Maybe someone can tell me what the Church thinks of this, I will ask my Bishop... but I'm wondering... if the Church has gone over it yet... I put in a request for it on the website... LDS.ORG

One thing I would like to mention is that there are psuedopigrapha, which is scripture like material that was not included in the Bible.  When the bible was compiled a couple of centuries after Christ there were dozens of books that could have been included in the Bible.  There were many copies of the Bible with different books in them.  Finally the Catholic Church chose the current compilation that is used today.  There are many scholars out there (in and out of the church) that say that they are just as valid as some of the books that are contained within the bibles pages.

The 91 section of the Doctrine and Covenants deals with this issue the best.  It discusses the study of the Apocrypha, which is a collection of books that is additional with the Catholic Bible.  It says if you have the Spirit to discern what is true, then you can read it and obtain what is good that is written there.

See below the verses from section 91.

1
Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you concerning the aApocrypha—There are many things contained therein that are true, and it is mostly translated correctly;

  2
There are many things contained therein that are not true, which are ainterpolations by the hands of men.

  3
Verily, I say unto you, that it is not needful that the Apocrypha should be atranslated.

  4
Therefore, whoso readeth it, let him aunderstand, for the Spirit manifesteth truth;

  5
And whoso is enlightened by the aSpirit shall obtain benefit therefrom;

  6
And whoso receiveth not by the Spirit, cannot be benefited. Therefore it is not needful that it should be translated. Amen.

Eve had to eat the fruit and tempt Adam to do so as well... else the plan would not have rolled forth.  No doubt Judas had to betray Christ.... and it was known ahead of time that he would do so, else a different spirit would have been sent in his place.

Father knows ahead of time what choices we will make.... but he still allows us to freedom to make those choices.... that is a demand of justice.  We could not be judged for acts we WOULD have done given the chance.... we are given the chance, and then judged for what we do with that chance.

Father knew that Judas would betray Christ, and he knew that a betrayer was important to the plan.  He gave Judas the opportunity to be faithful, but knew full well that Judas would not.  Judas hung himself.... and indeed, Father gave him enough rope that he could do so.

What we will do is not mandated ahead of time.... but it is known ahead of time.  Because he created us, and he knows us.

I have the same point of view, Christ had to die for us, he wanted to. that is why it brings up the question... Did he ask Judas to turn him in? but then if he did there are things that dont make sense. i dunno. I don't really think I believe it.

I haven't read to much about the Gospel of Judas, but I never thought he was "evil". After all without Judas's betrayal Christ wouldn't have died. If Christ hadn't died he couldn't have risen from the dead. And so on.
