Praying for a testimony
Posted On 09/27/2008 23:20:48 by prisonchaplain

Often we Protestants, and especially we Evangelicals, criticize LDS for seeking a spiritual feeling whenever you want to know what is true.  "The Bible says, I believe it, and that settles it!" we like to exclaim.  However, I find this practice refreshing and biblical.  The most dramatic case in point is Acts 2.  Here are dozens of followers of the Way (Jesus) babbling and expressing great emotion, and 9AM.  Peter stands up and says, "THIS is THAT which was prophesied by the prophet Joel.."  He's referring to the second chapter, in which Joel predicts that the Holy Spirit will be poured out on men, women, slave, free, young and old...and they will prophesy.  Sure enough, those that understood the languages being spoken knew that this was of God.  But, after Peter's sermon, 3000 believed.  Why?  Jesus didn't do that in 3 years, despite countless miracles.  I bare witness to you today that the reason so many believed is that they FELT the witness of the Holy Spirit that THIS is THAT which was prophesied by Joel.  No biblical prooftext could have had that result.  It was feeling--feelings and emotion produced by the witness of the Holy Spirit.

So, whatever other doctrines we may discuss and disagree about, I salute your reliance on the direction of the Holy Spirit.  Let that still small voice resonate in our hearts!  Amen.

PrisonChaplain,

I'm so thankful that we can agree on this! To me I've not understood the concept of not asking for the Spirit to testify of truth, so it was rather refreshing to read this.

From the Protestant perspective, even though you agree with our reliance on personal revelation, can you explain why the reluctance to seek for direction from the Holy Spirit? What is the belief of average Protestants when it comes to the purpose of the Holy Spirit?

Thanks,

POP

i think that was a nice blog... its says in the book of Mormon... that was in moroni.. that whoever ask with faith and a sincere heart he would know and feel that it is true....by the power of the holy ghost...and whenever we feel theres a burning bossom and happiness in our heart... thats the holy ghost manifesting unto us...i'm grateful...at many points of my life.. i have felt its truthfulness...(why jesus did'nt do that 3 years?)..i think that... its because... he is the living proof during that time&blessed those who believe ... and when before his death he authorize peter to be the head of the church...and blessed them and gave them the guidance of the holy ghost (spirit)(in his absence)...in the church, every new baptize member was confirm and given a gift of the holy ghost...to guide and be with them all the time..as long as they are worthy....ey, Bro., thanks for sharing this blog ha... twas nice and interesting... i just dont have alot of time to make one... maybe one of this day... i'll be sharing some... thanks again and have a blessed day!

Hello PC!

It was so great to see you blogged.

You are such an inspiration to everyone here, and much beloved. While I can be a contentious poster, I've mellowed a lot, partly because I've learned from your posts how to express a differing opinion, but in a kind and gentle manner.

However, I will always be up for a good fight.

Thanks again, Elphie

Amen!

Recently in the hospital, the hospital chaplain came by.  He was a sweet protestant man, and we had a wonderful opportunity to share our testimonies with each other.  It was a spiritual feast in the midst of a tedious week.

I have discovered we share much more with protestants than they think we do. Mainly a great love and gratitude for our Savior Jesus Christ. And the witness of the Holy Ghost.

Your blog was sweet.  Thanks for sharing it.

Sister of Jared
