Reflections on Conference
Posted On 10/05/2008 20:41:32 by bjshideler
Well I thought I would post some thoughts that I had on the recent General Conference.

The first thing of note is the new temples that were announced.  I live in Calgary, so a temple in our backyard is pretty exciting.  We did not think that we would get one here considering we are about 2.5 hours from the Cardston temple, and that it is a large temple and in general Calgarians are pretty affluent and able to afford to travel there.  The Greater Kansas City temple is interesting because Independence, Missouri (Jackson County) is within its borders.  Do not think that I am niave enough to think that they will put one on the temple site, but one going in the area is one to keep an eye on anyway.  And the last one of note is the Rome temple.  It is good to see a temple in Italy, a stronghold for the Catholics.  I have an old missionary companion from Italy and he will definitely be exited to have one in his own country.

Ok now on to my favourite talks.  I tend to watch for discussion on the gathering of Israel as it is one of my favorite gospel topics and typically there is not talk on the issue or surrounding issues, but this time there was 2 talks on zion and by apostles too.  Elder Christofferson talked about zion in his Saturday afternoon address, and Elder Eyering talked about zion and unity in his Sunday morning address.  We have been discussing unity in our ward for the last little while and a lot of the principles that he discussed, we have discussed recently.  Also in recent discussion in our ward has been that of making Sacrament meetings more spiritual places, and Elder Oaks did an excellent job of portraying this in his Saturday morning address.  I came late to priesthood meeting on Saturday, so I was sitting in the foyer listening to the first presidency talk and it was interesting to note a few of the young men goofing off out in the parking lot and from my vantage point the young men and few of the young adults wearing sneakers and texting.  Elder Uchtdorf's message was particularly inspiring to me about that we should lift where we stand.

I cannot wait untill they are put up online so that I can read them and study them.

The lot for the Temple in Calgary was purchased many years ago. It was recently developed for the Royal Oak chapel. I mentioned to someone that it seemed odd that the chapel was built on one side of the lot while there was a rather large open area that wasn't being used. I was told that the land was set aside for the purpose of building a Temple. This was about 3-4 years ago. I'm looking forward to seeing this Temple built. They say it will be completed in 2011.

I am aware of the other temples that were announced, but am not aware of some special significance of the temple in Philidelphia, my remarks were geared to the temple that had significance to myself, ie Calgary, or to the church ie church history with Kansas City and Rome with being the headquarters to the catholic church.  Is there some church history or other significance to Philidelphia that I am not aware of?

i found the conference talks rewarding to me, about helping out our brothers and sisters that are down trodden due to various reasons. They mention the trouble times and people loosing their jobs. Be generous with what you have, give freely, to those that really need it. I received several answers to problems that have come down my alley. Uplifting, Charity, choosing the right, be humble, all grist for the mill. I am so grateful for our church leaders
