Jared's Brother
Posted On 12/15/2008 12:49:10 by lissaand39
wow. I have a story we went over in Sunday School yesterday and it is really sticking with me.  We went over Ether 1-6.  There are a few things I wanna write in my Journal about this.  We mainly talked about the Brother of Jared.  Hmmm, we went over his last name, but I cant remember it.  Hold on, I am gonna see if I can find it online real quick. Well, no luck on that. 1st of all, in the old testoment, there is astory of the tower of babalon.  The people were building the tower that goes up to heaven. If u recall, Heavenly Father messed up their language to where they could not understand one another for doing this.  Many believe he did this to them because they were trying to take the hort cut to Heaven, BUT.....did u know that they made the tower waterproof?  Hmmmm, this was being built after the Great Flood of Noah. Tell me this, what was Gods promise after the flood??  That hw would never again destroy the Earth by Flood....correct?  So.....did he do this curse because they were taking a short cut? Or did he do it because they had no faith about what God had promised them!!?? Just a thought!! lol
aNYHOW back to Ether, Now the Brother of Jared was large and highly favored.  In the book of ether Heavenly Father tells of a promised land thAt has been prepared. Now this was before the time of Nephi. He said it was the land of promise for righteous people....now, remember....Moroni is writing about this.
In vs 9 Hevenly father speaks of his return
"And the fulness of his wrath cometh upon them when they are ripened in iniquity"( the end of vs 9)  Now, if u ask me, we ARE beyond ripened here on earth. It wont be long till he returns!!
Anyhow, the Lord orders them to build barges. with 2 holes in it. One at the top and one at the bottom.  Can u imagine being in a barrel floating around in the ocean? I know I couldnt.
Now they were concerned about the Dark. Heavenly Father told them to come up with away about the dark. Not for him to do it. Brother of Jared said that he would have the 16 stones and Heavenly Father could light them.  He made these rocks.  Because of Brother of Jareds faith, Heavenly Father removed the veil and showed himself to him.  He had perfect knowledge at that time. Boy I would love to have that.
While they were in the barges, they Praised the lord no matter what!!!!  they kept the faith.  At the end of ether. They die.
Anyhow. I really like this story. It is really sticking to me. so I figured i would right about it in my journal!!! till later.....

Wow... just read a little more about what the Book of Jasher says...
These people weren't just building the Tower of Babel for the purpose of dwelling with God, they KNEW they were rebelling against him!
Part of the Book of Jasher says...

"and they said to each other, Come let us build ourselves a city and in
it a strong tower, and its top reaching heaven, and we will make
ourselves famed, so that we may reign upon the whole world, in order
that the evil of our enemies may cease from us, that we may reign
mightily over them, and that we may not become scattered over the earth
on account of their wars...
And the building of the tower was unto them a transgression and a
sin, and they began to build it, and whilst they were building against
the Lord God of heaven, they imagined in their hearts to war against
him and to ascend into heaven.
And all these people and all
the families divided themselves in three parts; the first said We will
ascend into heaven and fight against him; the second said, We will
ascend to heaven and place our own gods there and serve them; and the
third part said, We will ascend to heaven and smite him with bows and
spears; and God knew all their works and all their evil thoughts..."

That certainly sheds some light on the subject, doesn't it???  No wonder God cursed them!

We went over the same lesson in Gospel Doctrine class in my branch here.  The name of the Brother of Jared was revealed by Joseph Smith when he blessed the newborn son of Reynolds Cohoon and gave him the name of Mahonri Moriancumer.
With the Tower of Babel... you would think that the two reasons you gave go hand in hand.  They had lost their faith, and BECAUSE of their unbelief, they did not want to do what was required to return to get back to Heavenly Father.  They wanted an easier way.  It's just like when people say they need evidence or "a sign" in order to believe the gospel.  Their unbelief and lack of faith cause them to want the short cuts.  We show our faith BY our works (see James 2:17-18).
In the Bible you can find references to the book of Jasher (see Joshua 10:13, 2 Samuel 1:18).  Although it is not in cannonized scripture, the book of Jasher has since been found and tells a fair bit about the Tower of Babel.  Part of the Book of Jasher says that "the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up one third part thereof, and
a fire also descended from heaven and burned another third...".  So it sounds like it was destroyed in ways other than by flood.
As for being "ripened in iniquity", I have always enjoyed reading Section 86 of the Doctrine & Covenants on this.  When you especially look at verse 5 in this section, and see just how anxious the angels are to begin bringing about the second coming of Christ, you can tell we're SO close to the time!
About having the kind of faith that the Brother of Jared had, in that Jesus Christ reveals himself to you so that your faith has become pure knowledge, that would mean a lot of responsibility too (see Doctrine & Covenants 82:3).  Not that I'm saying I wouldn't want to see my saviour, but at the same time, I'm really not sure if I would be ready.  Those who have seen the Saviour in person and KNOW him, have a great responsibility.  Look at what Joseph Smith was called to go through after having met with the Saviour personally.  Look at the hardships and ridicule he went through!  I certainly don't have that kind of faith and courage!  I think that is something that all of us need to work on though.
AND...something else to think about...Jesus Christ revealed himself to the Brother of Jared BEFORE he was even born of Mary in Bethlehem!  Imagine that!  If you look at how much of the Bible was written around the time of the Brother of Jared (very little), and how much had been said about the coming of Christ (again, very little) it's hard to imagine that he had enough faith that he was able to be visited by Christ!  How about that????  We have SO much given to us in the scriptures about Jesus Christ's life, ministry, and teachings.  We know LOTS about him.  What did the Brother of Jared have compared to us???  It just shows that our faith is SO weak!  Even with all that we have been given, we still don't have the same kind of faith as the Brother of Jared did!  A shame, isn't it???
