Zion

My favorite scripture mastery scripture in seminary Old Testament year was Moses 7:18 because I enjoy the idea of having Zion in a family situation.  In my Book of Mormon class last semester the focus of discussions about Zion were exciting and new, but also fell into line with the way I like to think about Zion.  Dr. Holzapfel's lectures were a completely different thing.  I have never thought of Zion as a geographical place before.  This, for me, is probably because I don't really understand what the doctrine is, don't think we know very much about it anyway and figure that if it ever becomes important for me I will be informed.   And so here I go back, a little closer to what I like to think about.  With a Doctrine and Covenants spin of course.

A quote from Brigham Young was mentioned in our discussion:

“to live with saints in heaven is bliss and glory, to live with saints on earth is another storyâ€

I grew up in Hawaii, in an area with a large LDS population that was, however, strongly tempered with the relaxed Polynesian culture.  Relocating to THE central stake of Zion, however temporarily has been a very large shift.  I think that living in Utah, and especially here at BYU we have a special opporunity to examine ourselves.  I honestly have a lot of problems with the culture that I've met here, just as some have had problems with the slice of my culture that I brought with (not the least of which being that my roommates shun my guava jam).  No person is easy to get a long with all the time and we have a great growing opporunity here to really examine ourselves in thie light of this unique set of experiences and to come closer and closer to building Zion in our own lives.
