How to spend $9 Trillion dollars
Posted On 02/09/2009 08:11:39 by rameumptom

Bloomberg notes that all the money we're spending is enough to pay off over 90% of America's mortgages.

We are spending billions, uber-billions, in ways that no one understands.  Money has disappeared, used to buy planes and vacations, and executive bonuses from companies that are failing.

IF we invest in a "stimulus" package, shouldn't it focus on stimulating something?  In my economics' classes many decades ago, terms like Return on Investment (ROI) and accountability used to be used.  Don't they teach those things to bankers anymore?

Today, what we need in Congress is not more lawyers, but more economists and businessmen.  Congress have given themselves one black eye after another by funding anything that moves, at the cost of future generations.  Both Republicans and Democrats are guilty. And, while I'm glad the Republicans are now sounding the alarm of excessive and wrong-headed spending, where were they over the last 8 years????

Given that this is a housing and banking crisis, and given the immense mounds of money being spent to fund programs for STDs, building new schools in cities that are shrinking in population, and other inane give-aways, shouldn't Congress really wake up?  Are they really so stupid as to risk destroying our economy by wasting trillions of dollars again and again and again?  What happens when there is no more money to give out?

What if, instead of blowing $9 trillion on all this bail out stuff, none of which has seemed to help anyone except a few bankers and Congress people; what if we were to just spend $5 Trillion and pay off half of everyone's mortgage in America?

This would keep everyone in their homes, reducing their mortgages, but still keeping them responsible for the remaining amount.  It would refinance the entire banking industry.  It would create new demand for housing and businesses.   And since the money would be going directly into the economy, waste would be minimal.

Could we then spend an extra $1 Trillion on helping out the poor? Sure, why not?  We'd still be saving $4 Trillion from the way things have been spent so far!!!!

Can we get a few honest businessmen working on the solutions?  I'm tired of corrupt bankers and lawyers making all the rules, when they've been the ones to cause all the problems in the first place.
