The Spirit Can Heal Us - Health Blog

More and more, I am becoming aware of the part that our spirit and emotions play in keeping us healthy, and healing us when ill.  Recently, I've been reading a book called Vibrational Medicine, by Richard Gerber, M.D.. While there some ideas in the book that I disagree with, it contains a smorgasbord of ideas and information that have to do with vibrations that can heal, their administration, and use, and scientific studies.  I have read other books about how healing at the spiritual level creates healing at the physical level.

When Jesus began his earthly ministry, he announced that He had been sent to preach the gospel and to heal.  He opened the book of Isaiah and read the passage: The Spirit of the Lord hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of the sight of the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, and to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.  Then he closed the book, and announced to all who were in the synagogue: This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. (Luke 4:18-21.)  The people in the synagogue were surprised and frightened saying, isn't this the man who we saw as a child growing up in Cana?  Why then does he declare himself to be a God, able to heal us?  And then they tried to throw him over a cliff.

We often think of the Lord physically healing of the blind, lame, deaf, dumb, and dead.  But his real message was for us to realize his purpose and mission.  If we would just come to Him, we can be healed.  Since coming to Christ not only involves true sorrow for our sins, repenting, being baptized and taking his name upon us, but also giving up our will to Him, and honoring his sacrifice on our behalf, as well as learning to be like him (keeping all of his commandments); I believe that coming to Christ is a lifestyle, which takes a lifetime to learn how to do it properly - or longer.

Even the simplest of his commandments may take a lifetime to learn.  For instance, the Lord admonished us to 'judge not that ye be judged'.  I have learned that it is part of human nature to judge everything very often, especially other fellow beings.  Often, before we learn all about another, we draw early closure (judgment).  Being a human tendency, we think it is okay to do this, but it isn't, and often leads us down an errant pathway.  If, however, we are able to suspend our judgment until we know everything there is to know about something, we would draw a different conclusion.  Since it is not possible for us to 'see into the heart of a man, as the Lord does' we are not able to 'know everything there is to know' about our fellow beings.  I believe this is why we are told not to judge others at all, but to leave judgment up to the One who does know all things.  I believe that if a person were able to live each of the Lord's commandments to their fullest extent, we would experience spiritual, emotional, and physical healing, which makes the journey well worth the effort.

Several talks given by prominent LDS people that speak about this subject of the Spirit of the Lord being able to heal us.

Elder Loren C. Dunn wrote: "I will always remember the experience of that evening when the Spirit healed me. It reconfirmed to me that if our hearts are right, we can go before the Lord and in one degree or another and in one way or another he will send the healing influence of the Spirit, and that the Spirit not only heals, but it also unites. This need not be a singular experience but can happen often."
Loren C. Dunn, of the First Quorum of the Seventy, Liahona, 1981, pg. 36.

Marion G. Romney stated: "Men cannot be made truly happy by having something conferred upon them from the outside. The scriptures tell of repeated healings from physical disorders performed by the Savior during his ministry...  Real joy and happiness consists of being healed spiritually. It comes from inside." - Ensign Sept 1973, pg. 2

R. Val Johnson stated: "Happiness, soul-deep happiness, has little to do with outward circumstances. It has everything to do with inner peace. And that peace comes when our lives are so in harmony with the Lord’s that the Holy Spirit can heal our broken hearts and make us whole... we can then claim our birthright—that peace, that joy which passes all understanding. - The Purpose of Life, Ensign, April 1993, pg. 22

Sister Jeanette W. Bennett talked about the importance of the Sacrament, repentance, and forgiveness.  She stated: "I realized that just as my body had physical scars it was trying to heal, my spirit was also pocked and scarred by careless things I had done. Heavenly Father knew we would hurt ourselves spiritually on earth, so he sent his Son to help us heal our wounds." Liahona April 1997, pg. 8.

One LDS Hymn states: "Let the Holy Spirit guide; let him teach us what is true.  He will testify of Christ, light our minds with Heaven's view.  Let the Spirit heal our hearts; thru his quiet, gentle power. May we purify our lives to receive him hour by hour." - Let the Holy Spirit Guide, by Penelope Moody Allen.

Gospel Questions and Answers, Tambuli, April 1985, 29-31 teaches of the importance of true repentance in the healing process: "We read in the Doctrine and Covenants that the spirit is much like the body, only that the matter which constitutes the spirit is “more fine or pure” (D&C 131:7). If we suffer major trauma to the body we visit a doctor, and he will prescribe a course to make us whole again. The same holds true for an injury or insult to the spirit. In order for the spirit to heal properly, part of the therapy is confession."

Recently, I talked to my LDS Chiropractor about becoming more and more aware of the impact that the emotions and spiritual light have upon the physical health of our body. He told me that he believes that they impact us greatly.   I asked about the use of AMI and Voll Meters (used by Chiropractors/Holistic Healers) to detect meridian blockages and energy flow. He told me that Muscle Reflex Technology (MRT) is a much easier way to test.  Apparently, whenever there is an unresolved emotional issue, it becomes lodged in the emotional seat, which impacts the body, causing a blockage of energy flow to the various bodily organs. When he is working with a patient, he is able to detect these blockages and dislodge them, returning the normal energy flow to the various areas of the body.  He has used this technique on all his patients with much success.  First, he does the physical structure alignments that are needed; and then he muscle tests the patient while the patient touches various areas in the body that had pain.  Then he uses the blockage release technique (body reflexology), and tests again.  Usually he is able to clear the blocked energy flow successfully.  I have noticed that as I walk out of his office, I nearly always feel new surging energy flowing through my system.  You can read more about Muscle Reflex Technology or Kinesiology at these links:

For the past week, my husband and I have been using a Relaxation and Self Instruction Tape for Healing at night, and have noticed both large and small changes happening in our lives as a result.  We are more relaxed during the day, even when stressful events happen.  We are more productive, feeling physically stronger, and mentally more alert.  We are happier as individuals, and as a couple.  Some of the dreams we have had since seem to be helping us resolve unresolved emotional issues.  We are feeling happier, and seem to relate better when together.  These are just a few things we have noticed so far.  To me, this is just one more piece of the healing puzzle.  I have come to agree with research done by others: I think that there is much emotional and spiritual healing that can be experienced; given the right tools, and proper motivation to do so; and that this healing will then lead to tremendous physical healing.  (Did I mention that I've been able to walk a lot better this past week also?)

I hope you are will be able to discover the truth about these things for yourself.  And if you already know the truth, you will share your story with the rest of us?
