In my Doctrine and Covenants class, we read in section 124. In this section, Joseph has just gotten out of jail and preaches to the saints with new confidence. Joseph, in his sermon, lays out new commandments. Joseph knows most these commandments (building the Nauvoo temple and the Nauvoo house) will not be accomplished in his lifetime. However he decides on which of these commandments are bare essentials and devotes his time and energy into them. In other words, Joseph is an excellent example of prioritization.
In the Church, nowadays, we face similar issues of prioritizing. For example, we may have to home teach, do homework, visit family, and have mounds of homework all in the same day. We need to prioritize! I think Elder Oaks of the First Quorum of the twelve put it perfectly when he said, “There were three degrees of quality: good, better, and best. We have to forego some good things in order to choose others that are better or best because they develop faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and strengthen our families.” (Ensign Nov. 2007) I hope we all can find the best choice as Joseph did as we prioritize our hectic but satisfying lives.
