The final writer in the Book of Mormon named Moroni, is an incredible teacher. As I ponder on the content and the delivery of the message of chapter 10 of his book, I am in awe. He is able to summarize his thoughts, give counsel, and commit the readers to do something. At the very end of the book, he does what all chosen people of God do; testify of Christ.
I was particularly thinking about his teaching abilities when I was teaching my mission preparation class during Sunday School this past week. All of the future missionaries that come had an opportunity to teach principles of the Restoration lesson, and then receive feedback on their teaching skills. We went over what was effective, and what things could be avoided. We talked a lot about teaching with clarity, boldness, and always committing the learner to do something to increase their faith in Christ. Moroni does this perfectly by first stating his purpose, second, exhorting us to be better, and lastly, testifying of Christ.
First, Moroni tells us his purpose for writing and sealing up the record is so that in the future years it will be read. Finders of the book will then be able to pray and ask God of its truthfulness. He tells us very simply how that happens; through the power of the Holy Ghost. He tells us that Christ “is the same yesterday, today and forever”. He exhorts us to remember all things.
Second, he tells us to be better. I particularly love his warnings. He tells us that he will see us at the judgment bar of God and we will be accountable for heeding, or not heeding, his words.
Lastly, he exhorts us to “awake and arise from the dust.. and strengthen thy stakes.. yea come unto Christ and be perfected in Him”. Moroni is giving us the formula for salvation. Not only do we need to gain a testimony of the record he is writing and sealing up for our generation, but we need to remember all our covenants, and strive for perfection. We all fall short, and he testifies that it is through Christ that we can achieve this perfection.
Moroni is a marvelous teacher. His simplicity and boldness bring a great end to the Book of Mormon.
