What doesn't matter
Posted On 05/16/2009 12:35:35 by the Ogre

Last night, I went to a friends and played DnD v3.5 (yeah, everyone in the group is single and older than 35, but who cares). I had a lot of fun. We played for about 7 hours and spent most of that time laughing, drinking sodas, and eating chips. The game is merely a vehicle.

The interesting part of the evening though happened on the way over. I car-pool with Kevin (I don't own a car--I sold my 1969 f250 for parts to pay for my son's mission). He picked-up a fed-ex package before coming over. He had just gotten a bulk package of sterno for his personal year-supply. We started talking about the very last of the last days. He speculates a lot about it (Islam is the enemy to him). We went over some scriptures that do describe the last-days and the destruction of the Jaredites and Nephites. Most of all, I told him the speculation didn't matter it was the preparation that did. I kept trying to steer away from predictions of the last days, to hear what his actual plan was. All four of us in our group have different approaches. Ken, the DM, has a years supply of guns, bullets, swords, and knives and probably four-months of food. Jim, the prototypical geek who girls avoid (man, I don't know why . . . his salary and sincerity more than makes up for his lack of social skills), has a couple month of food. Kevin, has it all. His OCD like approach to a year's supply would rival anyone in RS. He needs a three bedroom apartment for all his stuff (no guns though). My supply has been impacted by loosing my job, but it focuses on my 72hr kit, food, TP, clothing, water, and cooking fuel. The most important thing about our group of nerds is trying to do what is right (uhhh . . . Ken is struggling, he drinks coffee in the morning and I cuss too much).

I wish, however, I could keep us on track in avoiding speculation and often open hatred to some groups who hate Chr-stians, mormons, Americans, and humans. The red-herring distractions are often more than I can handle. I tell them again and again (like I do in the forums) that none of that is important . . . what is is the principal of total preparedness.
