Green Tea & Green Tea Extract
Posted On 05/21/2009 23:42:23 by ChristopherMills

This is something that I have been wanting to post, mostly for discussion among church members. I felt that this site would be more appropriate than some other networking sites for such a discussion. I am really interested in getting some feedback on this. This blog is inspired from the recent popularity of Green Tea and its health benefits that are advertised.

From what I understand, "hot drinks" in Doctrine and Covenants 89:9 has been interpreted specifically to be coffee and Black Tea (the popular hot drinks of that era). Herbal teas have been deemed permissible. I have spoken to a few LDS who were under the assumption that Green Tea is classified as an herbal tea and that drinking it does not violate the Word of Wisdom.

A fact that some may not be aware of is that Green Tea is produced from the Camellia Sinensis, which is the same plant that Black Tea is produced from. White Tea and Oolong Tea are also products of this plant. The difference from one Camellia Sinensis tea to another is dependant upon how the leaves are processed.

My question is this: Should we avoid Camellia Sinensis altogether or only the Black Tea that is produced from it? I am not aware of any statement from a General Authority on this issue. I am curious if anyone else could shed some light on this issue. For myself, I have been curious of the health benefits associated with Green Tea but have decided to avoid drinking it simply because it is produced from Camellia Sinensis.

Another topic in question is Green Tea Extract. I have done a limited amount of research on this product. As I understand it, there are various methods of obtaining the extract. Would certain extracts be a permissible way of consuming the antioxidants, vitamins and obtaining other health benefits associated with Green Tea (some use it as a weight loss supplement)? Should Camellia Sinensis be avoided altogether?

I am intersted in any facts, quotes, opinions, etc. on this subject.

Thanks,

Chris

You know... people used to believe smoking was "good for you".  There is some peace in the believe that if the prophets have asked us not to consume tea (and they didnt specify certain processes were ok) that we do not do it and not have the "oh man - who knew it had THAT side effect".

I love green tea.. um...loved green tea.  I would avoid the plant altogether.  Here's another way to think of it... will avoiding it harm you - keep you at odds with your Father? Or will he bless you for your utter diligence?

I didnt help did I? LoL sorry.

I wish I had the "scholar's mind" and could have the recall to cite this right but bear with me here!  We are taught the principles so that we might be able to govern ourselves.  it all ties in with our agency, what we fought to be here with.

I have youth that lean towards the "energy drinks" to get things going or for a "boost" when preparing for a test.  Again, I tell them to think of who they are and what our Father in Heaven would expect from them.  And then, be a standing example of the gospel and your commitment to being a chiild of God!

Hope this helps!

This is a great topic to discuss as I have found that it is very confusing for many members. From what I understand herbal tea would be classified as any tea that does not have tea listed in the ingredients. I love herbal tea and many times have not been able to purchase a particular flavor because tea is in the ingredients. I don't think green tea is a exception.

As for weight loss supplements that contain green tea extract i've never been able to determine whether or not this is acceptable. So I stay away from it.
