LDS Animation: where did it go?
Posted On 05/25/2009 20:57:26 by BrioCyrain

It has always bugged me how LDS and other Christian animation has just come and gone. Things like that Book of Virtues series that taught certain valuable life lessons through animated stories was a great tool for Christians. Also what happened to LDS animation when The Living Scriptures series was created, put on VHS and now has made in mark on DVDs(overpriced DVDs). Things like Scripture Bugs are great attempts but from what I see it lacks the core values of quality animation(one guy on this forum said he animated the whole thing himself which is not a professional way to do any kind of animation project. Everyone knows even an animated "short" requires plenty of animators and background artists so quality can be maintained to an extent).

These recent attempts have shown that it seems many LDS and Christian either lack the knowledge, skill, or resources to make LDS/Christian animation return. I find this disturbing since even the most crude of stories have been animated without difficulty with plenty of support and funds. People say "you got to start small" and use this excuse to make 3D or 2D animations that seem like a little kid animated them. Disney, WB, and Don Bluth started small but didn't stop these individuals from making the best work for their budgets as possible. They knew that it wasn't the money that would determine the project but their own shear skill that would make even the shortest of their films masterpieces.

If anyone is reading this blog and agrees with me. I think we need to let people know that the LDS/Christian market isn't dead and never has been. You see plenty of Live-action films springing up from the ground, why none of them a decent-quality animated film?

Well enough ranting. Thanks for reading this.

I know someone who used to write for Living Scriptures. He stopped because they wanted the storyline to vary from the actual scriptural account too much.

I've never been a fan.

BrioCyrain ~  I agree with what you say but I have to ask, how much money do the good LDS/Christian animated films bring in?  I support quality animation that will teach/reinforce/support those values taught in the home or church.  But if "we" don't spend the bucks to purchase these films, where will the finance come from to make them?  And, if the market is low, the cost will be high.
