confessions of a woman
Posted On 05/27/2009 08:05:25 by not_ashamed

I always wonder if other women feel as i do about their appearance. All my life I have had insecurities about how I look and whats weird is that when I go out with my girlfriends I worry even more about it than when I'm with my husband.

I think if we are all really honest about it, many of us are more concerned with what other women think of us than what men think of us.I think women are competitive by nature. Who's hair looks better? Who has better skin? Who has a better sense of style?  Why is that? I feel that need to fit in with other women, to be liked and think that if I am not dressed well or my hair doesn't look good other women will frown upon me.

I've always thought maybe it's just me and have often wondered if other women feel the same. So, I've decided to speak out and fess up in case any other woman out there feels the same and thinks they may be alone in these thoughts.

Sister Holland (Elder Jeffery R. Holland) gave a devotional talk at BYU-I about this very thing.  You almost sound like you are quoting her.  It's a great talk.

I must be the odd ball......................because I don't care what other women think of me.  I think for me that has a lot to do w/ who and what I am.  I am not girlie...........never really have been.  And I have always been more comfortable w/ and around guys.

I care what my husband thinks and that is pretty much where it stands.

We has woman need to comfortable in our own skin.

Amen!  In my mind guys
are either going to be attracted to me or not.

With women, I get thinking that they have this list of things that they
hold me up against.  I'll think to myself, "Right now, she's looking
at my stomach or thighs or FACE and thinking 'Wow I'm glad I'm not like
that!"  It's insane, and I know it!  When I’m out in public I
don't do that.  We're all probably walking around worrying more about
ourselves than we are about other peoples looks.  When making friends,
their personal appearance isn't usually a factor.

<CONFESSION

This is the only
exception to what I've said up there.  I'm 6' tall and not huge, but not a
twig either.  Most of my best friends are usually super short and shopping
with them SUCKS!  I've almost never been able to swap/borrow clothes with
my friends or sisters, so sometimes, going shopping with a friend who is closer
to my own size feels good and makes me feel a little less freakish.  My
short friends can tell me that I wear the size that I do because I'm tall, but
in the end it all = HUGE in my mind.  So NO, I don't go find larger
friends just to have a comfortable shopping buddy, but I do tend to avoid
shopping with those who are many sizes smaller than I.

Don't you love how you
can KNOW that you have a skewed view of yourself, others and/or reality, but STILL
continue to let it be what we believe about ourselves?

In thinking about this with
the church, it is just one aspect that can make fitting into a new Relief
Society more daunting, BUT when you can get past this and feel genuinely
accepted in a group of women, it is AMAZING and so fulfilling.

Totally do!  I love how a man can have a pot belly from to many twinkies and big gulp drinks. They aren't "Fat" they look "Buff"  We pop out 4 kids and are expected in the worlds point of view to look like the next top model. Yeah, I think we have some issues here.  LOL
