Every first and third wednesday of the month, I have the great privilege of teaching Faith in God for girls. For any who are not familiar with our church, this is a group of girls between the ages of 8-11. There are usually anywhere from 8 to 10 girls that attend in our ward. Most nights we work a game into a lesson and have tons of fun. Now as you can imagine this many girls can be a little wild at times. I usually spend a good deal of time quieting them long enough to hear the most important parts of the lesson. Last night I decided to teach the girls about building their testimony.
As we all sat in a circle on the primary room floor, i explained that we would be learning about something very important, something that will be a lifelong gift we can share with others. This got their attention. As I began reading stories to the girls about Joseph Smiths travels and how his testimony strengthened others and brought them to the faith they became so involved in the stories they hardly moved. Next they started laying on the floor face held up by their hands completely in tune with the lesson being taught.
As I bore my testimony to them they listened intently, then i asked them to bear their testimony. One by one these girls told us what they believed to be true. Each had a testimony that Joseph Smith was a prophet, each had a testimony that the church was true. The most amazing thing was each one knew what is was to feel the promptings of the spirit.
As I drove home thinking about the lesson we had just had, it struck me that I had just told the girls that the testimonies that we bear are not always for our benefit. Many times they are for someone else that needs to hear it. And I realized that I had just experienced that very thing. The testimonies that I had just heard touched my heart. To see the love these sweet girls have for heavenly father. To see how quite they became and the way they listened I know the spirit was there with us.
I have challenged them all to bear their testimony at the next fast and testimony meeting. lol......that also means I will have to bear mine.
