Articles and Covenants
Posted On 10/05/2009 21:38:02 by mlebroadbent

There are several revelations in the Doctrine and Covenants that have specific titles attached to them. One such revelation is section 20, also known as the Articles and Covenants. This revelation is a very significant one from the Lord. All revelations are important in that they are the words of God guiding his children in pursuing his will. However, some of the revelations in the D&C are more beneficial and crucial than others for all members of the Church.  The Articles and Covenants is one such revelation.  The Lord reveals in section 42 of the D&C to Joseph Smith for the twelve elders to know what three texts they must take with them when they venture forth to preach the good news of the Gospel on missions. The three texts include the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and the Articles and Covenants (D&C Section 20). The Lord heavily emphasized the importance for the elders to use this revelation while out proclaiming the Gospel. The revelation clarifies the many priesthood offices and duties as well as the fundamental doctrines and basic beliefs of the Church.  The Articles and Covenants were crucial for a missionary to have as he was out preaching the Gospel because it provided the information necessary to create new branches all over. Consequently the revelation was to be carried with all missionaries as they traveled abroad and therefore has been the revelation with the most copies found by present day scholars. The revelation had to be copied for the missionaries to take up until the whole Doctrine and Covenants had been published.
