Let us be Uncommon
Posted On 10/31/2009 11:43:30 by Gretchen

Here's a song that I once heard on the radio, and I think there is truth to it. Here are the lyrics, which I don't own, Greg Long and Kristy Starling own them. The bold words are words that you should especially read.

What if there's something bigger for me out there
Than the comfort of a life on this middle ground
I've played it safe but now I can't help but wonder
If maybe I've been missing out

'Cause I look around and see a sea of people
Everybody's moving in the same direction
And I think it's time for me to break away, break away

Chorus

I want to finally take the road less traveled
I want to run away from anything typical
I want the world to see the life I'm living
And call it uncommon

What if the right thing was harder than the wrong thing
But I did it anyway
Standing strong even when no one else was watching
What if I really lived that way

Every heart has its defining moment
This is mine and I'm not gonna miss it

I want to finally take the road less traveled
I want to run away from anything typical
I want the world to see the life I'm living
And call it uncommon

I don't care if it makes me look different
I'm never letting go of my conviction
Let the world see the life I'm living
And call it uncommon

I'm done with the easy way out
I'm done with the easy way out
Done with the easy way out
With the easy way out

What if I made it to the end of my days here
Only to find that my legacy was nowhere to be found
I don't want to waste another second
Give me the strength to start right now

Right now, right now, right now, right now, right now, right now

I take the road less traveled
I want to run away from anything typical
I want the world to see the life I'm living
And call it uncommon

I don't care if it makes me look different
I'm never letting go of my conviction
Let the world see the life I'm living
And call it uncommon

Uncommon
Call it uncommon
I'm done with the easy way out

How many times have you been thought of as "different" because you are Mormon or you hang out with Mormons. I mean, let's face it; we don't smoke, drink beer or other alcoholic beverages, we don't drink coffee or tea, we don't curse, and we don't dress scantily, even when it's the "cool" way to dress. Why then do we do it? Because we know that in the end, it will be worth being different.

I once saw a documentary in school about tornadoes (I think), and they where talking to people, and one of the people they spoke to was a volunteer from the Church (I know because of the bar that tells us the name of the person they're speaking to) and I couldn't help but wonder, how many other churches would send people to help the victims get their lives back, and have them happily do it for free. No payment except perhaps a smile or a "thank you". Not many, most people want rewards for their good deeds. This to me isn't very Christian. Jesus never wanted fame or glory, he wanted to do the right thing and have the glory be God's.

Try to do one nice thing for someone each day, without any reward. This can be something as simple as giving a homeless person some food to eat. I believe that if everyone did this, then the world would be a better place, especially if they "pay it forward" (you do something nice for three people, who do something nice for another three people, etc.).

Good luck!
