Doctrine and Covenants 42- The Law
Posted On 11/02/2009 13:50:15 by Davidman

&nb sp;   In Section 42 of the Doctrine and Covenants we are taught the Law of the Lord as revealed through the Prophet Joseph Smith.  I’m impressed by the amount of doctrine contained in this chapter as well as the many teachings that are so important to me in my life.  Among the many significant principles and doctrines revealed in this section I feel that a couple teachings have significant importance.  Two verses stand out in particular to me.  In verses 45-46 along with verse 61 I’ve learned much about the Lord and the way that he works among us His children.

&nb sp;   The Lord tells and teaches us in verse 45 that we should “live together in love,” and that we should “weep for the loss of them that die.”  I feel that this verse coupled with the following verse which teaches us that “those that die in me shall not taste of death” because death will be “sweet unto them,” shows us the desire the Lord has for us to live together in unity.  As we show our love one towards another and look for ways to serve our fellow man we can gain hope that our deaths will be peaceful and we can find joy and peace in knowing that the Lord has taken that person that has died unto himself and that death was “sweet” to him.  Personally, this provides comfort in knowing that since we all face death in the end, it doesn’t necessarily have to be miserable.

&nb sp;   In addition to verse 45 and 46 is the great counsel that we receive in verse 61.  The Lord teaches us that in conjunction with receiving revelation is the proactive part we must take in asking.  Furthermore we are taught that if we ask and continue to build our knowledge, we come to “know the mysteries and peaceable things” and things “which bringeth joy, that which bringeth life eternal.”  This shows us that through our diligence we can receive knowledge of that which will guide us to eternal life with our Heavenly Father. This is such an important piece of information that the Lord teaches us in section 42.

&nb sp;   I feel that within this section we are taught the Laws that we must live by and also are shown the path to receive those things necessary to lead us to eternal life.  This section provides us with the principles of Zion that if we live can bring us the joy and peace that we all seek. In the time period that Joseph Smith received this revelation, it came as the Lord had promised as the Law to be given in Ohio. It’s significance continues to this day.
