The Amistad

Prompt:Please write your thoughts and reflections on the movie, The Amistad.

Response:This was such a great movie to really see the appalling treatment of the Africans brought over to America. I cannot believe how brutal they were treated. It is very hard for me to comprehend not considering Blacks people. This movie was a very eye-opening experience for me. It was interesting to see how Baldwin was able to creatively present the case so that they would win the case. He used logic to prove his case, but the people just try to refute that logic he presents so they don’t have to face the reality of the situation. All they care about is retaining their “property”.  I am so excited to see what happens next week; we had to stop at a pretty crucial part. When I saw Cinque’s recollection of events and how they would tie a pile of rocks to the Africans and throw them overboard, that made me ill. I cannot comprehend such brutal treatment being acceptable. There are no words to describe that immoral incident. It was neat to see how interested the Africans were in the Bible, I mean he could not even read the words but he was able to understand the gist of the story by the pictures of Christ. I love how they apply it to their situation. That was an awesome part of the movie. It would be very hard to understand how the American Government works especially when you cannot even understand the language. Especially with the incident of the trial having to go to the Supreme Court because it was appealed by the president. That was so brutal to get their hopes up that they had won only to realize it is not that cut and dry, especially when you have a president up for reelection who has to look good to get the votes. That really bugs me. It’s good to know that there were advocates for abolition. I was stunned when Tappan was saying that if they had not won the case it would have been better for their campaign against slavery. I was kind of confused by that. It really didn’t make sense to me especially since he was on the side to have them be freed.

I cannot believe how they talked about these men as property- like cattle or furniture. Initially they are debating who really owns them! I just cannot even describe my thoughts on that topic, it is incomprehensible to me.

It is movies like this that really put slavery into perspective in my naĂŻve mind. I mean, I always knew it was wrong but it never seemed so severe an issue as it really is. I never had really thought about the implications and how immoral it really is.
