This past week in my New Testament class we have been talking about how in the scriptures we can find early Christian hymns. My incredible teacher gave us a list of these hymns found in the scriptures, and I found one that I really like. It is found in Colossians Chapter 1, verses 15-20. Here it is:
15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fullness dwell;
20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
I really like how at the beginning it asks a question about who God is. Many people ask this question daily and don’t have the answer. The hymn then goes on to very simply say that he is The Creator of all things. It is interesting to note that this is how The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints also begins teaching people who want to know about God. While I was able to serve a mission in France, I learned how to teach people the Gospel. The very first thing that we were to teach people inquiring about the church was to talk about God The Father and how he is our literal father/creator. This is the basis of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. God is our loving Heavenly Father. He loves us. When we take a long time to create something beautiful, we cherish this object. God cherishes us.
The hymn then goes on to talk about how he is the head of the church. For a church to be God’s church, he needs to be included and be at the head of it. God leads The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Christ is at the head of The Church.
Christ is also our Savior and it is only through and by him we can be saved. That was the only way for human kind to have “peace” in this life. We all make mistakes. For us to have peace and become clean, we must go through Jesus Christ. He suffered for all of us, and for us to be able to return to our loving Father in heaven, we have to be perfect. Only by Christ’s atonement or sufferings can we become like that.
Songs are a great way to share thoughts and express feelings. I love hymns.
