Lately I have been studying in the Gospel of John. It is very interesting to see the differences between his writings and the other gospels. We know that John was actually there with Jesus and was an eyewitness of many miracles. This makes the gospel of John unique. I have been learning many things about the New Testament in my class I am taking. They are so cool! I would have never noticed these things before.
In chapter 2 we read about marriage and how Jesus turns water into wine. Not just any wine, but very good wine. The ruler of the feast was confused because usually the best wine was served first. They had already drunken much wine, but when they drank the wine that Jesus transformed, it was the best. There are details like this that John includes that are so interesting. Also we see that just before Jesus turns the water into wine, John explains things to the reader in verse 6, “And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.” If John was writing to the Jews, he wouldn’t have had to explain the purpose of these pots to the reader. So we know that John is writing not to the Jews. Interesting.
I have also noticed some things as I have been reading John in my personal scripture study time. It seems to me that John includes a lot of detail in his stories that could only come from an eyewitness. I love that. I feel it makes the stories that much more real. For me I am able to visualize much better what is going on in the story.
I love chapter 4 because I think it shows my point. This is when Jesus is by the well and teaches a woman there about the living water. In verse 4 he tells us about how Jesus had to go through Samaria. Also in Verse 5 he goes on to tell us about where this well was located and how Jacob had given this land to Joseph. Verso 6- talks about Jesus “sitting” on the well at the “sixth hour.” For me those are all details that aren’t necessarily important, but they give meaning and validity to the story. I really appreciate that. I love getting these small details from the gospel of John.
What a great book.
