Who were your relatives that helped in the Paradise settlement? Do you still have any that are alive/living in the area? Both sides of my mothers family are from way back then as well, the Gibbs and the Summers families. Guess what - my wife and I went this past wednesday and viewed/held the original shotgun that killed the mos leader David Hinson, and then was taken and used to kill one of the Conder sons in the massacre!! Then we went and spent a few hours viewing reading thru John Henry`s original journals, records, letters to and from home, etc., as well as his wifes midwife birthing records, letters, etc. WOW, do I have an even greater appreciation of them, who they were and what they represented. Feel free to email me anytime at my work address: jhansen at printwatkins dot com !!  Jeffer-t.

I'm from upstate NY.  But my family helped settle Paradise, UT.  When I
was a kid and visited the cemetery, I noted the large monument
to the fallen missionaries .  My dad told me the story of the Cane
Creek Massacre and the story stuck.

Thanks for your reply. Yes B.H.Roberts did indeed travel over with the Gibb`s on the ship. They were the ones who played the game of marbles together!! Elder John Henry Gibbs, who was one of the five persons who died at Cane Creek, Lewis Co. Tenn. was my great great grandfather. My wife and I are actually in the middle of compiling "alot" of stuff on him for a book we are working on. As far as Bro. Roberts, I have only read parts of the stuff on him, but hope to read it in it`s entirety in the near future! Just out of curiousity, where are you from? Jeffer-t.

Hey there california_ave: I am positive that you know who the person is that is wearing the old hat and overcoat that you use on your profile pic. right? !!!  It happens to be the gentleman who retrieved the bodies of my great-great grandfather and one of his mission companions home from Tenn. after they were gunned down in the Condors home at Cane Creek! Hmmm B.H. Roberts ring a bell? I am actually in the middle of additional reasearch on my g.g.grand dad as we speak. Have came across some additional historical items, etc. we`re going to go see in the next few days/weeks. Anyways, just had to comment on the pic.  Have a great day, Jeffer-t.

I loved your comment on the Church History group forum.  I think that we had better learn to all be the "somewhere inbetween group".  I love church history and embrace all of the controversy as well as the faith promoting stories and revealed doctrines.  I believe that with both we are moving forward on the path to perfection as we have commaned to be.  One of my favorite books is Bushman's, Rough Stone Rolling, although I have read many other good ones as well.

Let's get some discussion going over there, shall we?
