Mormons say polygamist sects a head ache

Quentin Cook, a spiritual elder with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, told Reuters in a telephone interview that his church of 13 million had to constantly contend with public misconceptions stirred by the actions of a few thousand polygamists who were not attached to it.

Members of the polygamist Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints keep to themselves on compounds in remote parts of Arizona, Utah, Texas and elsewhere.

"The confusion is of concern very much for the Church ... we have got over 13 million members and if you look at that membership the Church has doubled since 1987," Cook said on Tuesday.

Elphaba- THANK YOU! That's exactly what I've been thinking. No where in any of the pleadings to "make a distinction" between the FLDS and LDS has the church or it's leaders expressed concern or compassion for the families, especially children, swept up in the fiasco in Texas. I would expect a, "We pray for those involved, especially the children, that the situation is resolved in a way beneficial to all those involved." But there has but nothing of the sort, just cold indifference towards these people. KosherXMorg
And here is a link to a recent post on polygamy: http://mormonsoprano.com/2008/04/17/one-mormon-view-of-polygamy/
What does the number of members of the Church have to do with anything right now? I can't even imagine the anguish that many members of the FLDS, especially its children, are feeling right now. I think Elder Cook's statements are very cold-hearted in light of the trauma this is causing the people who believe polygamy is still a commandment of God. Not every polygamist is a corrupt child abuser. I do not in any way condone the corruption and abuse that DOES occur in these communities. And at the legal level I support what the Texas officials are doing. But on the human level, I can't imagine these poor children's fears right now. Just because they are born into polygamist homes does not mean they won't feel terrified. The fact is, if Mormons hadn't ever practiced polygamy, for whatever reason, the media, as well as the public, would not be so interested in the story. This endless effort to separate the Church from the FLDS is disingenuous. The FLDS would not exist if the Church had never practiced polygamy. At the very least Church officials should publicly state its compassion for the Texas community at the trauma its members, particularly its chidren, are going through right now, and leave it at that. The fact that the Church has doubled since 1987 shows polygamy is NOT the issue its officials want to make it out to be. Elphaba
Here is a really good video release as a followup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OqdOM9udv4
