You just have to know that it's all historical fiction.
I didn't like the first one (havent' seen the rest) because I thought it was the Joseph Smith story, and so I was like, "what?" My daughter also kept asking me, "where's Joseph Smith?"
I also hated the way they had Joseph get the Golden Plates. LAME. It's not that hard to stay vaguely historically accurate on that one now is it? Oy.
I have heard that the second is better, and maybe I'll appreciate it going in knowing that it's historical fiction. . .
