The brother of Lamoni was given the name Anti-Nephi-Lehi by his father after the conversion of the people. Most likely this was a “king” or coronation name similar to “Nephi” that was the name of the Nephite kings. The name means not descendant of Nephi descendant of Lehi. It is important to note how peoples were named and governed by law (covenant) and that when the Anti-Nephi-Lehi name was droped they were called “the people of” Ammon. This is interesting because Ammon was the son of Mosiah and had right to claim to be king among the Nephits. But since they were not called the Ammonites this indicates something different in their covenant as opposed to the Nephits.

All of this follows the ancient order of kingdoms among the Hebrews that were called Israelites when there were kings in Israel and the children of Israel, sons of Israel or people of Israel before there were kings.

Something else that is interesting is that the G-d establishes a different covenant among his people based on the political order – if there are Kings or Judges over the people. I have stated that most Christians of our modern era do not understand covenants and so none of this will make sense to them – nor do they understand the effect these different covenants had on the church and how the church is organized. Also most Christians do not understand what their status will be in heaven – if G-d will be their king or if he will be their judge. There is a difference according to the law or covenant and the responsibility and role of citizens.
