Speaking of the Small Plates of Nephi, Nephi said:
1 Nephi 9:
5 Wherefore, the Lord hath commanded me to make these plates for a wise purpose in him, which purpose I know not.
I bet Mormon appreciated that Nephi did it, and it appears we get a much more spiritual account than Mormon's original abridgement of the Large Plates of Nephi from Lehi to King Benjamin.
