The LDS religion is not about forbidding things, its about spiritual growth and becoming more Christ-like, We are all at different points in our spiritual walk and only you can decide what point you are at.
My guide to things like that is this "If Jesus knew what I was doing - would he mind?" And you will find that your answers will probably change over time and you (hopefully) grow closer to Christ. There are things I did as a new convert that I would never do now and I am sure there are things I do now that 20 years from now I would not do. Hopefully as we stop doing un-Christ-like things we replace them with more Christ-like behavior.

On the white shirts -- I hate them, I wear blue about half of the time and have even worn a black shirt a couple times, many of the men in my ward feel the same way, you'll see about 50-60% in white and the rest in colors.
