There was an episode of Qi not long ago where it was stated that the 'mark of the Beast' isn't really 666 at all but that it was a mistranslation and they got the number wrong. The trouble is I can't remember what they said the number should be.

Wouldn't it be ironic if all the time we worried about 666 we happily accepted some other number which turned out to be 'it'?

Actually though I think PrisonChaplain is right that God will not condemn someone who is tricked into it. It will only be those who willingly wear it (whatever it is) as a badge of honour in open defiance of God who will suffer.

Your are correct. It has to be 'open knowledge' with the acceptance of the beast.
