Default Computer Security

Antivirus 2008...

Does anyone have information about this software program that just popped up?

What do you use to protect your computer against viruses?

Symantec by Norton for all XP Systems. My latest Vista machine purchased for my beloved companion, that runs the virtual lan, runs the latest McAfee Security Tools. However, the Router is hard protected by MAC IDs only and how many allowed [to that domain], every system has the latest BlackIce Defender behind the wall, along with Spyware Doctor.

This is what I use now
AVG Free - Download installation files & documentation

Its free. I guess it is kind of a pain that it updates itself every day (but I guess that is good). For being free its good enough, you won't have to pay a thing.

Berry, I'm not a geek but generally any time something "pops" up while you are cruising the internet it is NOT good.

My step-son is a geek- he works for the US Government in catching hackers. He says that for home use, AVG is good, real good. It is free (or you can pay for the upgraded version). Yes, it does update itself every day- but it doesn't take much time to do that.

He also told us to get rid of Norton and McAfee- they are power eaters. They eat up way too much power and memory for the good that they do.

Another power/memory eater is AOL. If you install every version of AOL that comes out without deleting the old version you are slowing your computer down.

Another thing that you should be doing on a daily basis is a Windows Defenders scan. I have mine scheduled for when we eat dinner. At work it is scheduled during our lunch hours.

One more thing that we have on our home computers is Registry Mechanic. We pay for this for three computers and run it at each initial startup. Oh, we also have Spyware Doctor, we also pay for this one. Husband runs this one for me because when I do it, it balks and freezes up for some reason. Guess my hands are too cold for it.

General rule of thumb, never click on pop ups. By the way, do you have the latest version of Explorer running? If you don't, you really should, because it does have some anti-spy ware properties.

One of the free softwares I recommend is Avira: Anti virus for Linux, Windows and more with firewall, antispam, recovery security - Avira AntiVir

If you want to spend money so you could use Kaspersky.

Aside from AVG, which I have, I use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer or Netscape. I was leery at first about using a new browser but Firefox is awesome. IE is so prone to spyware, adware, worms, etc. I definitely recommend Mozilla Firefox for a browser for more secure browsing and free of pop-ups. I also like tabbed browsing (opening up different tabs in the same window for multitasking. I also use Spybot to clean up any spyware that happens to get through.

I tried Firefox and it messed up my paf program, Quicken, WebShots and my MSOffice: Word, Excel, etc. Then when I tried to respond to the forums I am on it would mess that up too. So I got rid of it. Now with my new computer, upgraded Word, Quicken there is no way I am going to risk using Firefox.
