Default Pheasant, anyone?

Well I hatch and raise pheasants every summer to be let go at my farm... I just put the 5 week old chicks in their outside run last night. It's a long rectangle with chicken wire on all 4 sides and top and bottom to keep them safe. Well, there's this one chick that doesn't exactly run away-he spins in circles. Last night/this morning, the neighbors let their cat out (which I have told them a thousand times NOT TO DO since it comes in our yard and terrorizes my pets) and it somehow got its paw inside the chicken wire... and ripped the baby's wing off at the elbow!! I stopped the bleeding and dressed the wound and other than being blind in one eye from being batted at (and of course the wing amputation), the pheasant is fine and healthy. My problem now is that I can't release it into the wild! It OBVIOUSLY wont be able to fly and since it's blind in one eye, it will REALLY just be fox food. I didn't go into this wanting a pet pheasant. It's not tame in the least but I can't figure out anything else to do with it! Ideas, anyone?

Poor birdie! I have no idea what you can do. Is there a society that deals with this sort of thing?

I have to agree with breezy. Raise it to maturity and do what hunters do. At least you'll be able to be quick about...you know...

Have you talked your neighbor about this? So that hopefully they'll get the point?

It's almost tempting to catch the cat and send him to the shelter as a stray . . . oy. . .

If you do not want to eat it, then maybe find a wild life conservation place or group. They might know someone who'd love to have a pet pheasant.

My neighbor keeps pheasants and they aren't really any worse than having stupid chickens. You just have to have a screen or net over the top too. They are fun to watch and I love the sound the roosters make. If you are so inclined, there is no fowl tastier than pheasant either.

You always need to be cautious and watch out for Pheasant uprisings. If that happens, it is best to keep them under glass.

Contact your local vet on information for information on wild life rehabilitaters who look at providing long term care for wild animals that cannot be released (e.g. bushfire victims etc). I had a friend who provided a home for possum amputees via an animal welfare association.

The other options are raising it for dinner, putting it to sleep or continuing care for it.

Being a breeder is a challenging thing to do as there are the occasional sadnesses to deal with. Best wishes with it all.

While you're at it, may I recommend an excellent book on pheasant hunting? Danny, the Champion of the World, by Roald Dahl. (same guy who wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). Probably one of my favourite books ever. Hehe. The spelling checker wouldn't stop showing "favorite" as a misspelling until I gave it the British spelling. Anyway, the book probably wont give you much of a new appreciation for pheasants, But it will show you different tricks you can play with them. Heck you've probably already read it.
