Default The Ants are Taking Over

Help! The ants are taking over!

They completely ignore the Raid ant poison i set out. They completely ignore the cornmeal, which i heard is supposed to work. The baby powder works until they find a way around it. Like i really want baby powder all over my kitchen floor.

Any ideas?

Good question and one I have no answer for. I had the same situation in a house I lived in in San Diego. I tried everything to get rid of them and nothing worked. I as well would love to hear other responses.

I had a friend in california who would buy ant killer from the home improvement store...the kind you spray from a pumper...and he would go around the base of his outside walls once a month. That seemed to keep all the critters at bay

6 Tbs sugar
6 Tbs fresh, dry, active yeast
1/2 cup honey or molasses
10 small plastic lids or bottle caps

Place all ingredients in a small bow...mix well till smooth. Place the mixture into the lids/caps and place near the ant trail (s). Can also be spread on a piece of cardboard and placed on their trail. It traps them.

Sage or white pepper repels ants. Sprinkle around affected areas...in cupboards..in crevices.

I was also told if you make a chalk mark around your home the ants won't cross the chalk mark. Don't know how true this is.

If you can locate the entry point where ants are getting into your home, you can get rid of them by sprinkling cream of tartar, powdered chalk, talcum powder, cinnamon, powdered cleanser, or chili powder in and around the area. The ants won’t enter areas covered in these or similar substances.

Ugh!!! I hate ants. We have had problems with them since we moved in here. First of all, it depends on what kind of ant you're dealing with. We have sugar ants. They absolutely LOVE Doritos. Let one crumb drop on the floor and it's ant city. And having three boys, you can imagine that my floor is not squeaky clean. I also discovered they love pepperoni. Anyway, I am careful to pick up messes quickly and vinegar throws off their trail. I also read that cinnamon repels them. One day I got so desperate, I made a cinnamon paste and spread it around the baseboards in my kitchen. It seems to work, but maybe because I had made a barrier - not so much the cinnamon. I kept a spray bottle handy for when they showed up - soapy water. Now I have a vinegar spray and if I am too tired to give the floor a thorough cleaning at night, I spray the vingear/water around the areas they tend to appear and that's been working great. Don't spray them with a pesticide because the exterminator told me they will spread to other areas of the house - trapping them is better. Another thing that seemed to work pretty well was when my husband got a bottle of ant killer and poured it on a nearby anthill. It's a kind that they will eat and bring to each other, which is what you want. You want them to take stuff back to their home and kill each other. If you just kill the ants that are appearing, that's just a temporary solution (which I sometimes settle for because I want them the heck out of my kitchen).

Instant rice is also supposed to work - supposedly makes their stomachs swell until they die. I poured some outside near an anthill but don't know if it worked.

Anyway, see if you can figure out what kind of ants you're dealing with and do some searches for solutions from there. If it's sugar ants, hopefully my ideas will work for you. Are they all over your house or in one location?

Spray vinegar on the entry path of ants like window frame, door etc.

Perfume could be applied to the entry points of the ants.

Equal part of borax and confectioner sugar could be used to kill ants.

Soapy water spray also helps to get rid of ants.

In the last place I lived we had ants on the exterior. An exterminator used these small pellets. They attracted the ants who carried them back to the "den." They think they are goodies. Well it then kills them at the source. He laid those out and I never saw another ant while we lived there. It was some concoction he put together. Wish I knew what it was.
