I was wondering if anyone has heard of Trichotillomania? If you suffer from this or think you might I would love to talk to you. I think this might be what's happening to me and I don't understand it or know where to go for help.

Obsessive compulsive disorder. It manifests itself in various ways in various individuals. Compulsive hair pulling stinks quite badly. And since you are ripping it out rather than cutting it, it damages the hair growing things in the scalp so it doesn't grow back as fast.

I have OCD which is related to Trichotillomania. I don't pull my hair out, but I have a number of other obsessions. For example, I obsessively delete my posts on this message board.

There are medications and therapists that can help you.

Also, try to find the book "Brain Lock". It is the best self- help book on OCD I ever read.

Also try the Obsessive Compulsive foundation:

Actually the best thing to do for trichotillomania is some serious therapy with a doctor who's competent in brain disorders. You'll want to turn the obsession into something else. Rather than focus on your hair you'll want to be able to scratch your wrists or something if it's the pain that your body wants to feel. It's not going to go away although it might lessen as you age (although the social damage will have already been done). You basically need to talk to a doctor about learning to change the obsession. That's the thing that's possible, making it go away isn't.
