I need to understand rings. I see beautiful diamond rings on girls' fingers but they aren't on the left ring finger. No woman could really afford a diamond ring (or have a good reason to buy one for herself) so what do they signify. Does having a ring on the right ring finger signify anything? Does having a ring on the left middle finger or the right middle finger signify anything?

you're right NO woman could afford her own diamond ring.....so that must mean missy elliot and Liz Taylor and all the women of Bev Hills are just either renting or they had to rely on some man to buy them the ring for their birthday or something....
Sometimes I think you act shallow as a way of magnifying your intelligence....then you go and say something like this that makes me think that perhaps I'm dead wrong.

I wear a gold wedding band on my right ring finger, because I am involved in True Love Waits. and YES! it does work as a reminder, kinda like how one would tie a string around their finger to remember to stop at the market and bring home a quart of milk and a loaf of bread.

As for the bling-bling I have no idea if it means anything, but that it is just a trendy fashion fad.

The only ring that I know of that has a different significance depending on what finger its placed and what direction the design points to is the Irish Wedding ring. It can signify marriage, friendship, family love, engagement, etc.

Europeans do wear wedding bands on the right ring finger, but I dont know if the engagement ring would go there.

Some people will place the wedding band on the middle finger, because of an old belief that that finger's veins lead directly to the heart.

As for diamond rings I have one myself as well. and NO, no man bought it for me. I thought it was pretty, and I bought it. It doesnt look like an engagement ring, its just a pretty piece.

When it comes to jewelry, I am an earing freak. I can't seem to feel right without a pair on. I feel undressed without them.

I also prefer other gems that arent as popular, because they are different. White saphire and mystic saphire are really pretty.

How do you know they are really diamonds? Many fakes out there today actually look better than real ones.

I know a whole HOST of women who buy themselves their own jewelry. I would be one of them if I wasn't married and/or didn't have children.

They buy them for any number of reasons...but probably because they saw it, liked it and wanted it. There MIGHT be a significant reason, but unless you ask, then you won't know. Some jewelry for me has significance and I don't wear it very often, for that reason...only on special occasions.

Right hand rings, for the most part are for show...they are for fun....
Most women consider the left hand ring finger sacred and won't wear a ring on it UNLESS there is a reason.

It's probably like buying new shoes or accesorizing in reality.

I love unique pieces.

I KNOW my dear husband takes a stand against buying jewelry because he thinks it's propaganda....the same way Valentines Day is a sham...LOL! It's the same way I take a stand against wearing leather or fur. So since I KNOW I will likely be on my deathbed before he'll even consider buying me another piece of jewelry (w/ the exception of my wedding/engagement ring)...I am saving for some 'real jewelry' to hand down to my own daughter some day.

I find your post highly hilarious and exceedingly ignorant to anything female related. You're likely to find fun and unique pieces. MOST women I know wouldn't wear a diamond bridal ring on their right hand....but then again, there may be some...I don't know. My grandmother has always bought her own jewelry. When she passes on, her daughters...my aunts...will receive some great pieces. She always swore diamonds and ruby's were better than worrying about finding a man! (hahaha...she was married to my gramps forEVER!)

Today's females are FAR more independent and capable of taking care of business....and they take care of their fun and jewelry too.

My grandmother taught me you wear the ring you were proposed with on the right hand until you are married, then the ring and matching band are united as two pieces on your left hand on your wedding day to seal the promise....So I guess you could say it was a promise/ engagement ring lol
