I'm not from utah either, but in my own state I know of ways to find volunteer opportunities and they are probably similiar. What things interest you to volunteer for?

The salvations army is pretty involved in some of the most needed volunteer opportunities.

Special needs children need more people to help teach them to read
Foster kids needs lots and lots of stuff, and time
Women's Shelters
Homeless shelters need food preparers often
Hospitals
Schools
Juvenile jails
Crisis center volunteers
Nursing homes need visitors, teachers, servers, crafters

I have a great idea, but it may or may not be applicable to you. I used to have a retired racing Greyhound, who I adopted. I went through a 12 week training class to get him certified to be a therapy dog. He could then go to general hospitals, childrens' hospitals, rest homes, etc. It was really great seeing how those people reacted to the dogs. It was a total change of pace for them.

Of course this all depends on you having a dog in the first place, and especially a trainable dog! It's not difficult though.

We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." - Marianne Williamson
