My son and I are visiting Edinburgh, Scotland August 1 with the high school theatre group. We are looking for travel advice for that area. Where can we go to church? What weather should we prepare for the first of August? Should we use traveler's checks or get local currency. So many questions... help!

Well here's one thing I can help with.
Do neither.
Use American Express if you have it, or a credit or debit card with either the Visa or the MasterCard logo.
All of these can be used worldwide and assure you are getting the best possible exchange rate at the time and point of service the transaction is made.

Hi,

Yes I'm from the UK, I live in England tho, not Scotland. However I have been to Edinburgh a few times and can tell you that it's a lovely city.

In order to find the nearest ward, I would look at the UK LDS sites online which list all the local wards in the UK.

I haven't travelled abroad for many years, so don't feel able to advise you about the use of currency/traveller's cheques or American Express..perhaps your travel agent would be the best person to advise you in that respect.

Hope you have a great time over here!!

I just noticed you asked about the weather...well, just expect the worst and hope for the best, the weather in Britain is highly unpredictable..at the moment we're experiencing lots of sunshine but with the occasional thunder storm and heavy rain...bring suitable clothes for all weather conditions!

Thank you for the response. I've been out of town. Pushka did reply but unfortunately she doesn't live in Scotland.

Thank you for the advice. We did get new ATM cards with the MasterCard logo. We're hoping for the best!

I'm sure we will love it! I just hope we can find the ward there. I wish there was a way to email a member in Edinburgh...

Thank you very much for the reply! I've been out of town and just now got it. My husband found a list of the wards for us. I'm hoping I can find what time the meetings are.

Can you tell me about using an adapter for the 240 v outlets? We had a bad experience in India and I'd rather not have a repeat performance in Scotland. A friend says to get an adapter from Radio Shack but don't I need a converter? (our adapter in India was from Radio Shack) Do you have any experience with that?

How is your heat wave? I read about that and the melting pavement. Was it really that bad?

Hi...

Pleased to hear from you again. The heat wave is lovely, but a little too much for me at the moment. We've been experiencing temps. up to 35C, which is very hot for us...I hadn't heard about the melting pavements, but if its tarmac, then I can believe it!!

Umm, about the voltage problems...sorry, but I'm one of those people who doesn't really know too much about these things!! I know that our electricity is pretty okay over here, but perhaps consulting a travel rep. again might be appropriate in this case...I'm useless at this sort of thing!!!
