I have had problems falling asleep almost every night for about (maybe) two months.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Reading keeps me up longer, because I get to into the book...(Even the BoM lately)
Andjust lying there doesn't work either....
I CAN lay awake until morning...

maybe your brain isn't resting. have you tried progressive relaxation or other relaxation exercises, or medation. things that will clear your head without stimulas. books are good, but give your brain something more to think about. i have had a hard time clearing my mind in the past. so much so that i had to get a cd that had relaxation exercises on it, in a kind of self hypnosis kind of way. it has helped me to have that voice guiding me until i learned how. still use it sometimes.

as a word of caution on all the medications out there, if you have ANY family history or yourself have a history of sleepwalking be VERY careful. i have a family history of sleepwalking and my mother took some sleep meds perscribed to her. she would take them and for about an hour would say strange things. we would talk to her in the morning and she would remember none of it. she told the doctor and he said it couldn't happen, suggesting we were lying. one day she took the med. at like 2am and then called my sister from the store around 6am saying weird things and buying lots of stuff. we picked her up and took her to the dr, he said she had been sleepwalking on the drugs, but the drugs wouldn't let her fully wake up. SHE HAD BEEEN DRIVING ASLEEP! enough to scare me. not saying they can't do good, but that side effect is not talked about. big problem in my book.

good luck

Okay.. My grandma mentioned something about the hypnosis thing to...
and I think you are right. I think my mind isn't resting. I will see what I can do about a CD or something, and see if it will work for me.
Thank you for the help!

Hey Des,

First thing is not to stimulate your mind by thinking about what you are going to post on LDS Talk. You want to establish a routine to condition you body that "it's time to sleep." Keep you bedroom for sleeping not work, etc. Physical activity should be during the day-not at night. Be careful with naps. Turn the lights down or off one hour before bed. Don't worry so much about "I HAVE TO SLEEP!!!" That is paradoxical, it keeps you awake. Etc. I haven't read it but here is a site that is about sleep. http://www.thesleepsite.com/hygiene.html Maybe it has some good suggestions.

I know this sounds realy bad...but I just thought about it...cause it was so true in my case.... I couldn't sleep.... couldn't sleep... to much to worry about..... so I would just lay in bed and say my prayers.... I mean really got into long, deep one sided conversations with Heavenly Father... and I would somehow be so relaxed I wouldn't realize I had fallen asleep until I would wake up and feel guilty for falling asleep during a prayer.... than say...... Amen and go back to sleep.
It worked for me.

I have had lots of problems with this also they gave me medication for it...but i try to not take it everynight i have heard it is addicting and that scaries me...but anyway...in talking to my counsler about it this is what she told me and it helps. she said alot of the things that have been said earlier do relaxing things listening to CD's or even classical music helps me...and then make sure if u rnt falling asleep, this is the "rule" your not aloud to lay in bed longer than 20 min. dont pay attention to the time cuz that will keep u awake. but if your not asleep in 20 min. then you GET OUT of bed, you want to train your mind that the bed is where u sleep and if u lay there awake for hours then your telling your mind its okay to just lay there awake, so get up walk up or down the stairs walke around the house do something for 10 min. try again...this helps me alot, and now i rarly get up even once....
i hope that made sense.

This is something I could probably write a book about, and believe me, that would put anyone to sleep ASAP.
So look for it next week at Barnes & Noble and where other fine books are sold. OK.. now that I have your attention, time to straighten up and pay attention.

I have had this problem for the better part of the last 3 months. I tend to find that when I have events in my life that turn things upside down, it affects the nocturnal clock and does not function properly. I wonder if there is any connection to your state of mind, ie.. at peace and things are status quo, or they are in turmoil and unresolved issues storm the scene. So I have found that these are the times when you can pray -- really pray -- sometimes for hours and the time passes quickly. On occasion, I too, have fallen asleep for a time and then awoke and felt bad because I feel asleep during the prayer.

If you choose to not go the medication route, and personally, I agree with dancergirl that that is not always the best route as you have to consider whether they ultimately would do more harm than good, then you do the best you can. Of course, us men have an advantage. When we get "old" (AHEM...not me) we might be ordained a High Priest and then we will be able to sleeep anywhere, anytime, anyplace, and particulary during Sacramanet Metting.
