I recently read Pope John XXIII by Thomas Cahill - part of the Penguine Lives series that include Joseph Smith among other great figures in history.
The book contains a brief of papcy besides a biography of the Pope behind the Vatican II that changed modern Catholicism. I'm no scholar on Catholism but this was a good introduction to it. Cahill is a wonderful author. He doesn't pull any punches, neither does he shrink from praise when praise is due.
I recommend the Penguine Lives series. I read Martin Luther and am moving on to Herman Melville next.
