Gladys
thank you for your response - I love the story (Pride and Prejudice) it was very interesting to look at it from the perspective of "the Secret."

Can you talk about wood for 2 hours without mentioning trees? Can you talk about the power of positive thoughts, which is nothing but hope and desire and drive..oh! in other words FAITH. But never mentioned.

I thought the book was a waste. It seem to me a hogwash of political correctness. I have grown impatient with those that speak in those terms in a vacuum, as if good will, charity, love, hope and faith were "cosmic energy" rather than gifts of the Spirit of God.

Sorry if I flamed a little.

I can relate to the "PC" frustration. I tire from the on going need to "tip toe" around all the various belief systems in the world - especially when those values are in direct conflict with my own and I feel like they are being shoved in my face. With that in mind, writing a book, hoping to reach as broad of an audience as possible, I can understand why the author choose to go the "PC" route.

Are there any books on the subject of thoughts/law of attraction from an LDS perspective?

I bought it and read it through. I think it was both enlightening and a complete waste of time and money. In other words, as someone above said, it was redundant. But it also reinforced a few things for me, particularly gospel principles.

As for putting out positive thoughts in the law of attraction, I can apply that same principle to the gospel. Our Father in Heaven already knows our needs. When we are committed to him and seek to build his kingdom (Moses 1:39), he takes care of us in return, just as he takes care of the sparrows and the lillies of the field.

So in a sense, I do believe in the law, but for me that is a watered down philosophy of God's plan. I took the positive elements of the book and re-applied it to my faith and relationship with the Lord. It has worked all of my life.

I have never heard of the book but from what you are all saying in this thread is it the principle that if you have positive thoughts you will be successful and things will go right for you?

It doesn't seem to work for me. I try to have positive thought but I just seem to get knocked back all the time. I try to keep peace in the home and end up with everyone hating me instead of each other.

It's basically a matter of thinking positive and being positive, acting positive and living positive, consistently. Being consistent is the key, of course. It just doesn't happen overnight, but the more you think about something the more it becomes true.

Think about the time you were dead set on getting that fishing boat or landing that dream job. Did anything stop you? Did you have a game plan/a plan of action? Did it occupy your mind until you achieved it?

The same thing applies to your mood. If you are a happy person it is because you do things that make you happy. If you are always bored it is because you are a boring person, etc. You have to make up your mind what you want to achieve or become and keep at it. Hope this helps.

All I want is peace and tolerance of each other in the family but just when I am fooled into believing it is happening someone does something nasty and proves me wrong and all hell breaks loose again.

That's gotta be tough. The Secret probably doesn't apply too much in this case then. The best example I can think of is this.

One of my sons, who just turned 20, developed an interest in hunting. I don't know how he knows the things he knows about hunting now, but he knows quite a bit. He does now have friends who enjoy hunting, he's gone hunting with them, now owns a crossbow, which was given to him as a gift by coincidence and the list goes on. Once a person decides on doing something, he becomes attracted to like minded people, develops those attributes, etc. It's really quite an amazing thing what someone can accomplish.

Default quotes

a few quotes from the book:

"What you resist you attract" (I think the idea is to accept life/situation as it is, whatever that may be, so that you do not attract more of what you don't want.)

"The law of attraction says like things attract like - so when you think a thought, you are also attracting like thoughts to you." (like a magnet - so stay away from negative thoughts and count your blessings.)

"Gratitude is a powerful process for shifting your energy and bringing more of what you want in your life. Be grateful for what you already have and you will attract more good things."

Hope something there might help/make sense/be helpful.
