Define drunkeness?
Is drunkeness the state of slurring speech and staggering while walking while still having the mental faculty to be respectful, careful, courteous and dignified.
OR
Is drunkeness the state of defiling oneself and others?

maybe both of what you said.. do you have a concordance? Look up what the bible say's on the topic of drunkeness. The bible is pretty clear on this topic. And even though you might not find smoking listed out in the bible..our bodies are the temple of the Lord and we are not to defile it. This would include things like smoking, overeating etc..

You are wrong here, alcohol is a poison. It destroys the body. It not only kills brain cells it does irreversible damage to nearly every organ in the body.
Even in moderation it still does the same irreversible damage.

My interpretation of the statement is that alcohol is no more of a poison than sugar and milk if it is used in moderation.
I am saying that even in moderation alcohol is and always will be a poison.
Used in moderation sugar is not a poison, neither is milk.

I have even heard that these Christians have alcohol in their Communion chalice. What is going on with that?

I guess for the same reason that some people have unhealthy food consumption habits - they don't equate morality with the things we understand from the Word of Wisdom.
